Dear all,
this is my first posting, so please be gentle... Upgraded from dp3 to dp4 on an imac g4 800mhz. Recording voice with a usb-edirol-ua3d was fine in dp3. But in dp4 noise appeared in recorded voices, with the same hardware/device settings as in dp3. Messing around with buffers etc. has resulted in identifying two different kinds of noise: 'Clicks' every 5-15 seconds like a grain of sand on vinyl. Little 'crackling' sounds, constantly, more so on top of parts with higher amplitude. By playing with ALL the settings in 'Hardware' and 'Studio Configuration' I can either make the clicks or the crackling go away completely, but never the both of them. Am I forgetting something, some settings somewhere, some good old trick, some preferences. Or am I to return to dp3 and OS9? cheers, zimpy |

Most of the times this is a sign that you do not have enough ram. OSX uses a ton more ram than 9.

Thanks Kaboom,
There's 64+256Mb, and with other apps like photoshop and (light) video-editing, I never had any memory-problems. Hmm, there's not a way, like in OS9, to assign more memory to an application, is there? Or you reckon 320Mb is not enough? ciao |

I have seen reports that 348 mb's is not enough.. on a program that is not a cpu hog. Even at 500 mb's it might be a streach. At 750 mb's I have seen no problems.. Personally I run over 1 gig of ram
I don't know for sure, but I have seen on this forum that OSX alocates memory atomatically, but I could be wrong (most likely the first time). -------------------- kaboombahchuck

750 to 1 gig! ...ahum... What's it doing with all that ram? I'll try and borrow a demi-gig somewhere, and see whether that solves the problem, before making another investment. And also run the activity-monitor along to see how much ram is being used. I'll let you know! Thanks Kaboom & have a nice day |

Hey,
Finally was able to try 640Mbyte RAM on the same machine, which didn't make a difference... Then, and why didn't I try this before, I changed the sample-rate from 44.1 upwards to 48kHz.: The clicks and the soft crackling got a lot less. Then when I tried at 32kHz and the recordings became smooth and without any problem... I tried quite a few other things, but this is were I'm stuck now: 32-good, 44-very bad, 48-plain bad. Doesn't make sense to me... Edirol does standard 48, converting to 32 should give the most problems. If the machine couldn't handle 48ksamples, then why 44 is worse? cheerio |

It's mainly a clock problem then…
Check if you're consistant on Edirol settings, sequencer, sound prfs, and audio-MIDI set up. -------------------- Our Classifeds • Nos petites annonces • Terms Of Service / Conditions d'Utilisation • Forum Rules / Règles des Forums • MacMusic.Org & SETI@Home

most clicks, pops and motorboating sounds are clock problems.
Ram problems will result in slower performance, crashes etc.. but usually not clicks. Make sure that your hardware is clocked properly and that one device is the master clock. I use an Apogee Big Ben to clock AD16x/DA16X, tc6000, 2 AD8000SE's a digi 192 and an Apogee Trak2. Once it's all clocked, bye bye clicks. Also, terminate your recieving devices correctly with a bnc t bar and a 75ohm terminator. best, chappy |

I'm only using this very basic edirol UA-3D USB-audio-capture device, no midi-devices.
I'm not sure what you mean with sequencer and sound-proofs. Anyway, All is consistently set to edirol, and to one sample-rate. However, there's this odd thing that in the AUDIO-pull-out menu bar most is adjustable (sample-rate, bit-depth, Hardware... and Setings...) EXCEPT "Internal clock"; there is just no other option to choose from. So I guess that could cause the clockproblems, indeed. But how do I force DP4 to use the edirol-clock? Does it have a clock? And why does audio-capture work seemlessly in OS9-DP3 and OSX-Peak? Thanks so far, ciao |

You are running DP 4.12?
You've downloaded/installed all the updates available at/from www.motu.com? You've increased/decreased the "studio" voices setup in DP? Sometimes you have to "play" wtih those numbaer of voices settings. You've also updated the edirol UA-3D USB-audio-capture device usb drivers? |
