Does anyone have experience with this new usb soundcard (tascam us-122)? It claims "zero latency" but I've been warned about the general slowness of usb. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I just bought one and haven't had any problems on a 1Ghz/G4 Powerbook with latency. There is also an application that installs called US-122 Manager which allows you to set your Audio Safety Buffer from the default 2ms to 1ms which can help. USB is more than capable of handling a stereo input so I wouldn't worry about USB as an interface.

I got my US-122 on ebay new for $185 shipped + insurance which also made the choice to buy it a little easier.

Although I haven't had it for that long, it seems like a quality piece of hardware. I trust Tascam over newcomer audio interface companies who don't know pro audio like Tascam.

After yesterday's post, I went home and ran a few tests with the US-122, really focusing on latency. I found that there is 1ms latency when listening through my Powerbook's audio that is almost inaudible, but it can be bypassed if you use the Direct Monitoring input on the back of the Tascam US-122, if it is a truly critical to have absolutely no latency.

1ms isn't that bad for my recordings and I got used to the effect after a couple of takes, but your needs may be completely different.

Update: The same should hold true for the MBox, although I haven't tested latency on one.

hi. i just bought a tascam us-122. i have used it in the porta studio with a 12" powerbook 867. i haven't had any problems. logic audio records vocal and guitar very good. took the tascam us-122 and the powerbook to a gig last night and recorded off the board into the powerbook. worked beautifully. went to the main studio after the show. used my powerbook and the tasccam us-122 to connect to the console and listened to the show we just had.

i can put my powerbook to sleep and when it awakes the tascam us-122 wakes up also.

someone on this board i think said forums are generally for people needing help. if you don't hear a lot about a product then it is probably because no one is having problems with it. get my drift?
i hope that my opinion stands strong for awhile. if it doesn't i will let the forum know.

get it and start recording! biggrin.gif

email me. post a reply. please. i want to record some tunes. biggrin.gif

Hi. I just got a US-122, today. I am a home recorder, or I want to be. but i need some help getting the 122 to work. the users guide kind of made my eyes glaze over, i'm not familiar with much of the vocabulary. It's supposed to come with Cubasis but i can't find any Cubasis. Gigastudio just has a Setup.exe. I don't see any mac installer.

I have a 700Mz iBook(dual usb) with OSX.2.3. I want to record my guitar, just for starters. I installed the drivers. I plugged in 122. I plugged in Les Paul. the signal light goes on. I selected Tascam 122 in Sound Control panel. I don't get any guitar sound through iBook speakers. I plugged headphones into 122. I can't hear any guitar, although I can hear some music i recorded using the iBook built in mike, with SoundStudio--that plays through the headphones. So, 122 is acting as a sound device of some kind with my iBook, but i can't hear the guitar playing. And i don't have any Cubasis to record with. I don't see any way to use SoundStudio with it.

I'm sure there must be something i'm not turning on or adjusting or connecting. The users guide of 122 says there are user forums on the Tascam site but i don't see any link. I also see on the site that it says for US-428 users, they don't ship with Cubasis for the mac or it's not available yet, but will be shipped out when it becomes available.

Can anyone suggest some way i can get started with recording? I assume i need some software other than Sound Studio. some in this thread said that they used Gigastudio. All i see is the windows installer.

thanks to anyone who has any info. i feel apologetic for being so ignorant.

Oops, i got the wrong thread. i just noticed there's another thread that might be more what this is about. I'll post this there too.
