hi everyone
i´m about to switch from pc to mac with a new powerbook 1.67. i will be mainly using Reason, Ableton and a couple of instruments like Absynth and Battery, with a tascam us.122 soundcard. My question is: will 512m of RAM be a serious problem or will it be enough if i keep a low track number? thanks |

I just made the same jump with 1 Gig, essentiall the same software setup (minus the VST's), and I'm thinking I might not have enough.
maybe its just the mac, but it seems a little sluggish for a "powerbook". Let me have my way with it for another week or so.... |

Remember, the PowerBooks are STILL only a G4 processor. An iMac is cheaper and has a faster G5 CPU. Only get the PB if you MUST have the portability. Even then, the new iMac G5 isn't that hard to move around if you must.

Just to give you some advice. Every program for Mac (especially Reason) chokes the CPU of Pbooks and sometimes the G5. So far, PT, Logic and Nuendo are the only fast runners on the Mac. Yes, the others are workable, but they aren't nearly as optimized as the others. The difference is multi-cpu and AltiVec support.

I have never had ANY problems working with Reason on my 1.5 powerbook. Now REAKTOR....that's a whole different ball of wax. Ableton Live with REAKTOR can bring just about any computer to its knees but even then there are workarounds like freezing tracks. 512 meg of RAM is ok for a start but you will probably want to get a Gig pretty fast.
