Audio Files/powerpoint, I need some help! Options

Hi Guys - I need some help. I am working on a powerpoint presentation honoring James Jamerson (Motown fame) and want to be able to incorporate some audio files. I am using Office 2001 for the Mac, and will most likely be doing the presentation on a PC. What audio software/audio file format should I be looking to use? The audio samples I want to use will be about 30 seconds long - so I am guessing that I will need to get them in MP3 format? I'm not sure - Please Help.
