 Best Quiet External Hard Drive? |

I have two External LaCie 40gig Studio Drives which are now full, and its about time I bought a new one (Im also really tired of the noise they make!)
What is the best Quiet External Hard Drive available? Are the LaCie d2’s any good? And most importantly are they nice and quiet? Also, anyone using the LaCie Porshe External Hard Drives? Any good, Quiet? Thanks for your help.

Check out Wiebe Tech. The have several products. I am recommending the FW drive dock. No plastic box, no fan. Plug the interface into a bare drive, (7200 rpm) connect power and Firewire and your off. Need to connect another drive? DVD burner? No need to purchase another case, power supply and interface. Sweet
they have alot of other nice Fire Wire products including an encrypted drive. |

You may want to check out the Maxtor Personal Store 5000DV.
Both a usb-2 & Fw connectors. 7200 rpm ide/ata 133 hd inside an external box. External power supply unit. Also a great piece of gear. I bought a 200gb for 306 us$. Cheers: Dixiechicken -------------------- ==================

Are the Western Digital -ones any good? At least those which you put in your computer (internals) are probably the best ones. Don't know about externals

Yeah, I heard the d2s are just as loud as the earier LaCie drives. -but thats "hear-say" Ihaven't heard it yet but I'm looking for a new drive myself. Keep me posted if you find somthing. Check out the new Glyph GT series. They advertise HD that are quiet for recording. They look great but a little pricey compared to standard Ext FFW HDs. Happy hunting- Karl |

I bought a d2 for live recordings... and found I really needed to get a Glyph (Companion, in my case).
Mind you, d2s are great, and I've a few I use extensively IN POST, but they put out a high-pitched whine you don't want if you're in the same room or hall as what you're trying to record. In rare situations, I've also had luck with SmartDisk firelight bus-powered drives... if you don't need high track counts, they can be prettuy convenient and quiet! But for a real AV-spec drive designed to be quiet, go with Glyph. Makes a big difference in live recording situations. -Barry |

Thanks for your suggestions everyone.
I settled on the 250GB LaCie D2 triple interface (FW 400 & 800, USB2) It is quite quiet and not as noisy as the studio drives I have and the price was reasonable at £192.68, another deciding factor. Cheers. |
