I spoke with a digi rep who wasn't all the complementary of the 002. Have you thought of picking up a cheap 001 on ebay? I have used my 001 for 3 years now with a 7 year old macintosh and see no reason to get rid of it.
Regarding preamps: As I understand it, the preamps on the digidesign equipment are better than its competitors–focusrite. I can attest to the incredible sound quality of these preamps, especially when used with a good mic. One drawback of ProTools software: You do not get unlimited "virtual" tracks. The latest update of protoolsLE allows you only 32 tracks max. This makes mixing and arranging messy and combersome as you cannot split up every instrument on its own track most of the time. Fortunately, you can use third party software with digidesign equipment. What is the price difference between 002 and the other? Maybe that will be a determining factor. Remember, you will need to buy FX plugins! |
