Don't buy the update. Apple has screwed Logic Users. Audio Units do not work in Logic Pro 7. Apple is charging the same price for a Logic Pro 6 user who bought the update 1 month ago as a Logic 5 Platinum user who hasn't bought an update in 2 years. You are looking at a $500 rip off that is a piece of crap and doesn't work.
The changes are mostly extra plugins, and the dialogue boxes now look like Soundtrack.
No AU developer has yet released non-Beta AU updates that work within Logic 7. Those that have (like Waves) are forcing an upgrade. So if you are using v4.x AU Waves plugins you are now required to throw down another $500-$1000 for the updates to 5.x because of Apple's bullshit move.
What kind of idiots are working for Apple?

this logic 7 crap is so juvenile. have you people never heard or used the plug-in enabler. i use to use it on windows back a long time ago. granted this is a mac forum, and i now use mac and logic 7. you can use your AU's. you have to open the AU manager, and put a check to enable them. the reason it doesn't work is because at first is because the authorization has changed. you will get a warning when you start logic about the plug-ins not being authorized or something. just click okay and continue. when in logic 7 you can now select your plug-ins. developers of 3rd party AU's are going to be coding for compatibily, but until then this should get you threw the AU issue.
next. i often wonder why i read this board. i like it i post fairly often, but not much technical posts are here. always some kinda whiny crap about costs of products, or something totally not relevant to learning to use software or technique of recording. ever since logic 7 has come out all i have been hearing is don't buy it, apple screwed me or is screwing us. if you don't like it don't buy it. i bought it. i went the upgrade route from logic big box 5, logic pro 6, and logic pro 7. cost me 1000 dollars to get here. because i have a friend who works at guitar center that sells it to me for cost. so it came out even for me.
now. as far as the review being continued. it works fine. there are several new enhancement for productivity. they are there in six also well most of them, but you have to dig and go about shit half ass backwards to end up where you want. with logic 7 those commands and techniques are simplified for you. the new plugs that come with logic are great. they sound good.
i don't think that if you are in a working studio making money i would buy it and put it in production right away. i would get it though and setup a dev environment. run some small projects with it and see what works and what doesn't.

With all due respect you are wrong. The plug-in enabler does not work to enable AU plug-ins that have not been "fixed" by their respective developers. If you force enable the plug-ins from the enabler, Logic Pro 7 is completely unstable and will crash hard and often.
Again, the AU developers are months behind, because Apple hasn't communicated the fact that they were going to pull a bunch of b.s. when they released LP7. And some developers (Waves) are charging for AU updates that will work in LP7. That is total crap and it brought to you by the idiots at Apple.
Tech support is now going to cost $1200 a year - more than the price of the entire program. When you factor the update costs (5-6 $199 6-6 Pro $199 6 Pro-7Pro $299) for a bug-ridden piece of crap that doesn't work you are down at least $2200 plus tax ($1200 tech support + $697 updates for Logic + $300 Waves updates).
Doesn't seem like such a good deal anymore - does it?
Idiots.

"Idiots" wasn't a reference to editbrain or any other poster here, but to Apple. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Hi you guys out there.... As a proffesional music maker I will stay away from logic 7 untill everything works, I guess I will have to wait for 7.1 or something like that. The waveshell from waves are still a beta and a lot of other plugs have issues... So instead of entering apples beta testing program by upgrading to 7 I stay with logic 6.4.3 even if it would be great to try out all the new features in 7, but then again! great songs are NOT made by plug-ins by

Apple seem to have rushed this version of Logic, there are plenty new features and some that are missing i.e. the much requested PDC. the cost of support is in line with Apples other Pro Apps, I personally think it's an over charge they should have at the very least an direct email support for free, yes there are bugs and there are cool working features, Apple will come through with this software and make really cool DAW, but they may loose a lot of user's to other DAW's in between finally getting it right. HiramAbiff wrote: QUOTE Tech support actually costs $2799 a year. Wow! You Logic guys have my sympathy. I'm a long-time (and very happy) Digital Performer user and I was thinking of buying of Logic Pro 7 as well, but not after reading this. What the hell are Apple thinking? MOTU just released DP4.5 and allowed a three-month grace period for DP4 users to upgrade free. The way Apple are behaving with Logic sounds exactly like Microsoft. Scary... With regards to tech support, my advice to you guys is this: forget about the tv for a while and make time to read the manual. From cover to cover. Then, when you've finished it, go back and read it again. Read it in the toilet. Read it in bed. Any spare moment you get, read the fine manual. If there's a PDF version of it, get your Mac to read it to you. Because that's where the real power of any piece of software is – in the manual. I can't stress that enough. And the vast majority of all tech support calls concern subjects that are explained in the manual. Use this forum and all the Logic online resources for deeper stuff such as bug tracking, etc. If you hate reading, just try to remember you're reading about a subject that interests you greatly and you're halfway there. Regardless, you now have a lot of reasons to learn to enjoy it – 2,799 of them, in fact. Good luck to you all.

Okay everyone else is slowly 'catching up' with the new Logic 7 Most of my plugins seem to be working (apart from the VST FXpansion ones - but I think I need to spend a bit more time on this) 6.4.3 solved my 6.4.2 automation bug - thanks e-magic The only problem I get is when you get a core audio overload - it crashes out of logic without saving anything. I'm not happy about the whole support scenario - but - surely thats why we have forums like this - to help each other with problems rather than bitch about things. If we do that - every time we get a problem - we log it - and report solutions - then - well - we can all save each other $2799 - or however much the support purports to be. Or maybe this is just another one of those bitching forums? Be positive ... please?!?!?

I've been using Logic 7 for a couple weeks in production. It works great. However I am one of those people that just bought Logic Pro 6 last month and got stiffed with the upgrade. I did all I could to get apple to do something about it, but in the end I had to suck it up and come to the realization that Apple wasn't going to do anything about it. So I relentlessly bought the upgrade to 7 just three weeks after I got Logic 6. So how is it working for me? Great... I don't regret one penny. I was using Logic 6 with a MOTU 324 card that was notorious for problems, In fact MOTU just told me to upgrade to the 424 card, as they would not be upgrading the drivers for the 324 card. Logic 6 was unusable for anything. It would have freeze ups every session and I could get nothing done. Now since L7, Logic has not crashed once. I have run it for a couple weeks now and Its great.
Yes I do wish apple would support its customers better, and I also was very mad at apple, but the heat cooled off. I thought of switching to PC, but then imagined my PC becoming infested with viruses and going into a state of limbo.
So yes, Apple needs to work on their support, but I don't need anyway. The forums and Online support is better than most call support is anyway. And as another guy put it. READ THE BOOK.

QUOTE (Allan Phillips @ Oct 26 2004, 06:11) So yes, Apple needs to work on their support, but I don't need anyway. The forums and Online support is better than most call support is anyway. And as another guy put it. READ THE BOOK. Allan It sounds like you are a Logic hobbyist. Unfortunately, those of us who make our living with Logic don't have the luxury of using a piece software that doesn't work. Also, please understand that anyone who does this professionally has read the logic manual, participated on forums, used the infoweb before EVER calling tech support. In most instances, we know the program better than the tech support people. If I am calling Emagic, I don't even want to mess with the tier one guys. Case in point: Logic 6.3 Platinum was giving me problems importing midi files by the drag and drop method after I went to Panther. Everytime I tried use a function that had been implemented since at least 4.x, Logic would crash. I consulted the forums, the infoweb, my personal resources in LA and was finally forced to call Emagic's tech support. After 20 minutes on hold, my call was answered and I was informed that if Audio Midi Setup has more than 8 instruments in it, then Logic will crash when you try to import a midi file through the drag and drop method. The solution was to remove all instruments from the Audio Midi Setup. Now - I ask you, how the hell am I supposed to know about that bug and the workaround, unless I call logic. That specific piece of information was not in "THE BOOK", nor was it anyway on the net including the Emagic "infoweb". With Apple's new tech support policy, I currently have no idea whether or not that little chunk of information would have cost me $200 or not. One thing I do know is that, Apple would have taken my credit card number before they gave me that little chuck of information and it would have been entirely at their discretion whether or not they did charge me. Fuck that. If Apple ships a bugless program, I am not going to need tech support. Unfortunately, this does not happen in the real world and I hate to break it to Apple, but charging for tech support isn't going to happen either. Trust me. Try and charge me for tech support, I will single-handedly ruin your brand.

I own a Professional Studio. This is no HOBBY my friend. Sorry about your situation. I just wanted to let people here know that "I" am not having problems with the upgrade. And I do agree that the tech support situation is a shame.

i produce music for ads and have been using logic every day for the last 4 yrs. I just started using logic 7 and am a little dissapointed. Firstly whats with all the small scrawny type...I open the sync box and can barely see the numbers. Also now i have to tap numbers in the fiddly little smpte boxes as opposed to scrolling through them with my mouse. Ive found lining up the start of a movie to music to be much more fiddly and time consuming than b4, which is not good when up against clock.
Some great features though include, mixing music down into a movie and some of the extra plug ins.
Ill write more once ive spent longer with it.

Hi, I'm Luca from Italy . This is my simple review to help those who, like me before, want to buy and use Logic Pro 7 without discussing about problems of upgrade and prices. I'm not a professional user, I wish ... : I own ProTools LE on Digi002 and Cubase SX 3 using on a G5 Dual 2GHz. I've just bought Logic Pro 7 : I've found in L7 the best integration with Apple hardware ever ! It's a complete system that gives you the power of making music user and Mac friendly with a real arsenal of plug-ins, effects and loops right out of the box: I dont know If that was on L6: if it was, I understand the "incazzatura" of users. All the plug-ins works well: not only Logic plug-ins: Atmoshere, Stylus, Sampletank, NI Complete too. It works with Digi 002 via Core Audio : Pro Tools LE 6.4 use more CPU to do the same thing with the same plug-ins. I consider it a good but not cheap software. Yes, Digidesign support remains the better butwe have to remember that Logic works only on Mac: is it good or is it bad for us ? With this provocative answer I say ciao to all mac music maker, professional and not .

I believe that the $2799 support that some of you are looking at is meant for corporations to buy for their own technical support people to get direct accesses and not a user support package. There is a users support page for Logic on the Apple site. http://www.apple.com/support/logic/Either way, good luck. I'm sorry to say, Apple support sucks. I've met people that work for their tech support phone lines that have never owned a mac and know hardly anything about computers at all. They contract out their regular phone support to temp agencies so they don't have to pay benefits. At the end of a year they review them and can then choose to sign the person on as an apple employee who they have to offer benefits too, or let them go and ask the temp agency to send over more warm bodies. Most of the people I met got let go at the end of the year. These are people I've met at parties and while they may be nice to hang out with, I wouldn't ask them how to fix my mac, they would probably ask me. I think Logic will eventually turn out to be a good app under apples care but the old Logic users are understandably upset. I can sympathize because I've been using and upgrading Cubase since it was an Atari program and now find it, after all these years, to be utterly unusable bloatware. Cubase.....more like Crashbase. It comes down to the indignation any loyal user of a program feels when forced to come to terms with the fact that loyalty is a human emotion and your feeling it for a product made by a corporation which itself is a money making entity incapable of returning that emotional. For a long time I've been rooting for Apple to do well and I believe they make quality stuff, at least so far, but they are a company and they have a cold hard bottom line just like microsoft. Those who believe that this is the nature order of things expressing itself in all of its Darwinian glory are probably rich enough to afford a top of the line pro-tools set up and don't care to hear any of your petty whining. The rest of us will have to use something like Abelton (at least its stable), wait for apple to get Logic up and running right and put our hopes in the future of the open source movement to restore a sense of loyalty in something with farther reaching ambitions then how much money can be squeezed out of loyal customers.
