Hows it goin, this might sound kinda immature but anyways here goes:
Ok I bought a dual 2.0 ghz g5 w/ the 23in HD display (cheap jk) I told my friends about it who are also computer enthusiats (but mac haters) one said "Oh you bought a $2000 word processor" another said "You do know that the AMD 64 and the P4 EE absolutly smoke your computer right???" umm is all that true. I know it's what I want for music but is what they all said true???? Thanks alot SIntrepid |

Slowintrepid,
Macs are excellent computers for music and any other application. Ask your friends how many viruses they've had to deal with. Honestly. Take a poll. If they've had a virus, they own a PC. Just yesterday I spoke with two of my friends who are infected. Both computers are PCs. Mac users rarely get them. I love my iMac and so do my PC friends. Willis |

1. Ask them what professional audio software they are running
2. Anything else doesn't count (i.e. Metro, Band in a Box, etc.) 3. Chances are they'll avoid the answer, because... 4. No, when it comes to pro-level complex processing, such as audio/video/hi-res imaging, the PC's are left in the processing dust. 5. You bought a GREAT machine - don't let 'em kid ya - they're only jealous... Have FUN! P.S. Oh, yeah, ask them about the number of viruses they get...I've been using Macs since 1986,, and I've gotten two viruses - both from PC disks... |

yeah all they do with their comps is play online games. (so I guess in that area they have a one up)
so............with so little viruses I guess it was a waste of money to buy the .mac subscription???? also a little side note: it's a G5 and I have jaguar is panther really worth the upgrade (like other than it's a 64-bit OS what's the big deal????) |

Yes; it's def worth the potter..
![]() you'll find your G5 with about 40% better performance (mine did) which is a lot.... Do check availebility off drivers for hardware you use....not all are panther yet |

Dont worry, a good anti-virus program is always a good idea.
Remeber that quite a few macro-viruses can infect your Mac - via word-documents and the like. Play it safe - antvirus sw can always be disabled while recording audio, if you suspect that "Norton" interferes. Cheers: Dixiechicken -------------------- ==================

Panther is absolutely worth it. I have never seen an upgrade do so much for a computer. Really! You will immediately see a positive difference.

think I have only had 2 viruses in my life of owning a mac since my 8500 was new many years ago... I have never used any virus protection since... it may not be a bad idea to have but I really don't think your average person needs to worry themselves over it. I know off hand 3-5 other people with about the same experience with macs and viruses in the homes... they don't use antivirus software either.
But if it makes you feel safe... then buy it and use it. ![]() -------------------- ----------------------------------------

Only one virus, a gentle one, burn by Virus Barrier in 32 months of Mac use (9.1, 9.2.2, Panther...)..
Save your money for something else more musical!!! ![]() Some friends, with PC, about one virus attack/month that their anti-virus soft didn't protected... ![]() -------------------- LE PRINTEMPS DES AMOUREUX

Dude, your friends are crybabies. Nothing "absolutely smokes" a G5. I just bought a G4 (with various beefed-up options) in June, not knowing that the G5 was coming out so soon. I was a die-hard Windows fan for 10 years before I wised up.
So I'm drooling over the G5s that I can't afford now, but that's my only regret. My system doesn't freeze. I don't get viruses. OSX is just so much freaking COOLER than Windows. And since many, many media development software programs are NATIVE to Mac, I know that I will have more fun CREATING stuff on my machine than I EVER had playing games...Which is not to say I don't still. So be happy with your conversion--you are now a member in the Cult of Mac. Mongrel |

mongrel... welcome to the Mac community... always nice to hear when someone has been on the dark side of computing and has seen the light
![]() just curious what made you switch since you had been on the other side for so long? -------------------- ----------------------------------------

Well a few things made me switch.
1. I was forced to by a Powerbook by my school (apparently Berklee and Apple have a "partnership") at first I wasn't too psyched because I wanted to play games too lol but then I started reading reviews and so on and then I sat down with OS X and it's awsome I love it (much better than XP (btw my PC has window blinds running so that my Windows shell looks exactly like OS X) now that I have "seen the light" this is my new corny slogan: Once you have mac you never go Back lol (corny I know) |

"window blinds"? Now that got my attention. For those times when I must endure the "XP"'rience, where can I find such?

Well to get more info on the Fleet of programs they have you can go to their web site www.stardock.com the progs are like twenty buck each I think but I've heard that most people grab it off kazaa (I'm not saying do that, that's just what I've heard)
here's a pic of a PC with window blinds running with a OS X theme http://www.wincustomize.com/window.asp?Cmd...nUI_Preview.jpg and http://www.wincustomize.com/window.asp?Cmd...bar_Preview.jpg that's what all my PC's look like now |

What was interesting and funny to me was when my university upgraded from Windows NT to Windows XP the lab computers slowed to a crawl. They are now almost unusable because they are so slow. Mac OS 10.3 actually sped up my computer from 10.2.
