Hi there,
Just wondering if one if better than the other, (Reason or Logic). I'm hoping to make deep, soulful house, but don't know which one of these to use. I also don't know whether i need to buy a Mac or PC, or whether either will do. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks Ronnie -------------------- Veronica

Logic, if you get Reason by itself you will still need a DAW, because Reason doesn't record audio. Reason is basically a synth module, with effects and a midi sequencer.

You'll need a Mac if you want to run the latest version of Logic

Yep, Mac + Logic Pro, because then you don't necessarily need Reason at all - Logic comes with all kinds of synths, drum machines, samplers and effects. Reason 3 is very cool, but like gdoubleyou says, it can't record live audio at all. Which means no vocals, no guitars, no recorder solos, etc, etc.

If you want to go a little cheaper, you may want to try Ableton live - it's about half the price of logic & also has some virtual instruments & can work inside of Logic should you want to move on to a more "professional" DAW. I would like to note though that between my purchases of Ableton, Reason, Reaktor, Pluggo & a Ozone/Trash/Spectron bundle, I could probably have just gone ahead & bought Logic for the same price - I just did this over the course of the last 3 years instead of dropping a grand in one shot on the Logic Pro Bundle which is what you should be aiming for if you are going to get into Logic it at all (I understand that Express doesn't really offer the plugs/synths that the pro version does).

Exactly - Logic Pro is the whole enchilada. Get that and you could quite conceivably never buy another plug-in again. Although many people - myself included - still do.
You can run Live "within" Logic, but it's a big CPU hit. I do like using Live on its own, mind you. Very nice. And it has synth, drum machine and some cool FX plug-ins. |

I'm not much experienced with Logic. Reason is quite good soft, but it has huge disadvantage in my opinion: lack of VST plugins port.
As people mentioned here, You will not record anything to Reason (though You can import wav files). Frankly saying, Reason has closed architecture. |

All things said about Reason's closed architecture, there is one good point to it. Reason is ROCK SOLID. I've never crashed it - not once- I can't say the same thing about my current mainstay of Ableton/Reaktor. I mostly use Reason to chop up drum loops & the odd sampler riff as a REWIRE slave to Ableton but looking back on it, life was much simpler when I was using Reason as my main tool. For what it's worth Logic, by all accounts, can be a real bear to get around in & it is not exactly known to be crash free.

Frankly i love reason. I can have 3- 4 reason projects open at once and it doesn't crash on my g4 1.2 ghz ibook. I love its simplicity too.
With that said my vote is both. Logic is an amazing DAW, but reason just so damn reliable. The no VST thing is anoying though. -------------------- |

Ultimately I'd love a system where i can use synths like reaktor/absynth/korg's ones (vst's i meant) AND reason all in one, easily too!
I gather logic is the only solution? or is Ableton able to load up instruments from Reason? |

Yes, I often use Reason as a Rewire Slave to Ableton & it works quite well.

your kidding!?!?!?!??!?!? can you send me a snapshot of how reason/rewire interacts with ableton, like does it come up as a seperate window i.e. malstrom appears alone in ableton?
would be very interested to check ableton out instead of logic for sure!!! |

Okay... I am not so computer-sophisticated as to show you a snapshot but I'll tell you how it works. Basically you open up Ableton first & then you open Reason..Then you "arm" a track to record, setting the input to "Reason Channel 1". Then in Reason, you just create an instrument & wire that instruments output to Reason's Audio Out module at the top of your rack (you can create a mixer but it's not really necessary when using Reason as a REWIRE slave). Then you can either Transmit Midi from Ableton or use Reasons Sequncer (easier) for midi recording & editing which is clocked to run in time with Ableton's sequencer. VERY EASY. Logic can do the same thing. Logic is very cool but kinda expensive (however, trust me, you will spend the same amount of money in the end just in smaller segments & will still end up probably ownling Logic eventually, if you want to pursue professional work. I don't own Logic but will probably at least have to know how to use it if I want to pursue any kind of "sound design for visual media" kind of job. It is all going that way. Ableton Kicks Butt however.

was going to say, hold down apple-shift and press 3 to take the whole screen, or 4 then press space, to go for the individual components of a snapshot.

QUOTE (prosthetix @ Feb 21 2006, 02:28) would be very interested to check ableton out instead of logic for sure!!! You might try the tutorial on the Ableton website at: http://www.ableton.com/index.php?main=tuto...ials&sub=reason I know that it's Reason 2, but the logic is probably the same. Also in this month's Sound on Sound there is a section on rewiring Reason into Live. There's also tutorials done by Computer Music mag. I'd also check out the Ableton, Sound on Sound forums as there is a lot of advice and experiences there. Vince |
