It's too expensive. Edirol R1 is much better and cost less.

Have you had a chance to use it? As far as I can see, the MicroTrack has a smaller form function than the R-1, which is really nice. It looks like a cool product, but for about an extra 200 American, you could take possession of a new iBook. Now, I know the thing is portability, but an iBook ain't all that large, and would afford you not just a few tracks, but an actual production sequencer and whatever other software you might want to run, assuming you wanted to do some on site recording.
If you can afford an ultra small and expensive unit like this thing, more power to you, but that is a lot to pay for what is basically a 4 track pony. Course, if you are just looking to walk around town sampling people stepping on aluminum cans, then an iBook would be a bit much. Tis a need specific thing, guess i... Blessings, Damon

I'm not sure how that works. Would just plugging a mic into an iBook and running it into a recording program result in a lower fidelity than you would get recording on this M-Audio thing? Is an iBook not capable of recording very high fidelity without an interface? Is latency an issue in a purely recording situation?

If all you're doing is recording then latency doesn't matter. The built in sound quality on the iBook would most certainly suck compared to the m-audio or eridol device. Good sounding a/d converters are not cheap.

an ibook doesn't have an audio input built in. but for $100 you could get an m-audio fast track and be making field recordings for hours. I think these little recorders are cool... but i think i'll just stick w/ my minidisc recorder.
