Are phantom power and pre-amps seperate? I asked about why my AKGC1000S doesn't work on a previous topic and i was told that it needs a pre-amp and phantom power. The AKG C1000S claims that with a 9v battery, you don't need phantom power. Do i still need a pre-amp then? And.... why?
Help is much appreciated.

Yes, a preamp and phantom power are two different things. Phantom power provides power for the microphone to be able to pick up sound. Preamps take the sound that a microphone picks up and amplifies them to a level that a computer, recording device, or mixing board can work with. On your AKG's if you put in the 9 volt batteries that is your phantom power, or you can use them with an interface that provides phantom power. But you will need a preamp in addition to the phantom power.

Thankyou very much, you've been very helpful. It's so incredibly hard for me to find any information online which patronises. Sometimes, we all need to be patronised just a littl bit... (when beginning).

The Fender Discussion Page is a great place for a lot of helpful info, it's a pretty busy forum and lots of great people.
