live in a small apt, and usually am forced to do my audio werk in headphones most of the time so as to not disturb my flatmates. But whenever restarting my Power Mac g4 dual 1Ghz, it blasts that uber loud startup orchestral hit,,, you know the one?
*Bup Baaaaaaa!!!!* How the hell do I safely disable just that hellishly LOUD racket from my macs internal sound card or whatever? I DO have an M-audio delta series as my main audio card for all my music production, but also occassionally use the Mac's stock card for certain apps as well, so I do not what to totally disable that card,, Just somehow tweek the firmware or whatever that's responsible for that startup blast that's waking the dead. any ideas on this one? |

Having anything plugged into the headphone output disables the external speaker send, so what about plugging in a pair of headphones, or anyhting, into the Mac's headphone output?

Well thats one way to do it suppose, not bad thinking. Cheers
Still I'd like to know of a way to permenantly disable or even seriously attenuate the volume of the startup sound. Where does this startup sound originate from? Is it a mac hardware thing outside of the internal soundcard, somewhere on the board perhaps? Part of the internal soundcard itself? Can this sound be turned off, attenuated or even replaced? Any mac hackers here know the key? |

Yes, this start-up sound is annoying, but not nearly as much as the "boink" sound heard when adjusting the main output volume in the control strip. I use Adaptec Toast and there is a bad one in there too. Can't find to "off" switch for any of 'em.
(OS9). |

In response to ROBBO's problem, there is a separate volume control for alerts in the 'Sound' system preference ('Sound' control panel in OS9 and earlier). You can set that volume to mute, and instead of sounding the 'boink', it will just blink the menu bar.
I don't think that has any effect on the startup chime, but I don't feel like restarting my machine right now to test it! Turning down your Mac's volume will affect the volume of the startup chime, so maybe muting your volume will mute the startup chime too? Or at least turning it down as far as it will go will keep the windows from rattling when you start it up. |

Ahhhhh, my first silent restart, a beautiful thing!
It works a charm! It conveniently addes itself to the System Preference pane as well, so it's a snap to attenuate or mute the startup volume as we wish... without it adjusting the overall output level of the soundcard, I might add! How can I thank you for recommending this little app? It's exactly what I needed. |
