Do you know if the new Firewire iPod 40 Gig would work as well as a 7200rpm external HD??
Apple says the iPod plays these files: AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 (32 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible, AIFF, Apple lossless and WAV ..and Apple is promoting the iPod as a HD to transport files. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks sounds2me |

Interesting idea. I don't know the RPM of the iPod's HD, but I seriously doubt it is anywhere near 7200, or even 5400...

Hi! guys..
I heard of a very, very interesting idea. If not just curious!.. my cousin who's a pc/apple quite expert kind a guy, told me that one of his clients bought an Ipod and had some problems on the screen or something, so then they opened it, took the hard disk from the ipod out, and now his client is using this "hard disk" in the PCM slot!!!! So, this guy is having a 40Gb Hard disk on his wallet!!... How about that!? Best, Dustan -------------------- Powerbook 17" G4 1,5 Ghz and LOGIC

mhmmm it's a small drive with low power consumption, don't ask him to be fast too
As for the drive out of an iPod used in a PCM slot, yes, some bought iPod only for that (less expensive than the Dive alone from other sources). Are you planing to use your iPod as your external HD ? You can but it's not to be used exactly as your average HD. But to move files around it can sure help. For recording, the iRiver is to look after also. But for work, a real regular HD is still the best and work the way a drive should. -------------------- Our Classifeds • Nos petites annonces • Terms Of Service / Conditions d'Utilisation • Forum Rules / Règles des Forums • MacMusic.Org & SETI@Home

i read somewhere that someone was using their ipod with a standalone editing console and that the machine kept on having errors.
When the manufacturer was questioned they were aghast at the idea as the ipod's is much too slow for digital audio work... I think it's fine for backing up files or moving them from a ->b and so on, but not as an external firewire drive to record to. |

I've heard it's possible, but not a good idea. It wasn't designed to be used like that. Besides, why would you want to? You can get a 200 GB external firewire/USB2 hard drive for a lot cheaper than a 40 GB hard drive.

I would NEVER use an IPod as a hard drive for recording...
But I have used it for transporting files to a friend's house who is, like myself, using DP4. This works great- fast uploads and downloads, and easy transportation... |

Yeah - forget about using the iPod as a recording device - it just doesn't cut it
Works great as a temporary Backup/Transport device, mix evaluations, note keeper, song ideas recorder with an italk... etc etc MacIDOL.com |
