I'm interested in buying a new 12 in pb from the mac store. I'm curious if it would be easy to buy some RAM and upgrade it myself instead of paying $280 for 512mb of ram from the store. Is there a website that shows how to do this. I'd like to play around with garageband and possibly work up to Live or audio program. I believe that this would have the power that I need. I'd like to also be able to manipulate 2trk audio like in Peak or something else.

Thanks for the comments,

Jared

I put a 512 chip in my P.Book, tho I got it from the Apple Store near me, so I paid full price. Since it's new, I didn't want to void my warranty.

Installing it is crazy easy! Don't even sweat it. You pop off a panel in the back, it's like three easy steps and you just pop it in the slot.

I noticed a BIG difference with the extra 512! Made me want to up it to 1.5 gigs ASAP, although MacWorld magazine just did a test and found little difference in 1-1.5, and no difference in 1.5-2 gigs.

If you'll be running OS-X 10.3.x on your pb, and if you can afford it, put as much ram as possible in it.

Thanks for the comments. I found a tutorial on the apple web page about how to install ram. Question. If I buy ram from a 3rd party like 4allmemory.com and install it myself will it void my warranty? They're selling a 1 gig chip for $344 compared to apple's $700 with the computer.

Ask for certified Mac memory, as if PC memory to the same specs should work, on your mac you are not sure it'll be so. Macs are more touchy concerning RAM quality. Now you're not entitled to buy RAM from Apple, given the price they assume.

They seem to sell Apple spec memory… does someone here has already bought from them?

There has been a LOT of information regarding big problems with RAM and OSX lately on a Mac info site that I frequent:

www.macintouch.com

On the site they suggest RAM from Ramjet.com, as most of the no-name bargain RAM is causing huge problems for people using OSX. Even Kingston, usually a reputable brand name for RAM, has been making people's sytems unuseable. I think RAM is one area where cheaper is not better.
