Could any one please recommend a good software choice for me, I play the guitar (Strat) and would like to lay down rhythm, bass and drum tracks so that i sound a bit near the mark. I have been told that Cubase SX is OK then another “expert?” in London’s Music street (Charing Cross Rd) recommended Logic, the info I get is ambiguous and conflicting. Many thanks in anticipation

you might want to consider what audio input device you are going to persue and then decide software as some software works better with certain audio interfaces.

I have used cubase and logic, and prefer Logic. It seems more commonsensical. i switched from cubase afew years ago when all the people i knew with home set ups had Logic and kept going on about how much better it was and I had no-one to talk to me about cubase.

Thank you for your replies:
I seem to be getting there by reading the messages in another "Beginners" query. It seems that I should buy Digidesigns Mbox so that I have a compliant method for connecting the Guitar to the Mac. I see that this H/ware comes with Protools LE 6 software. Any comments or advice would be most welcome as I learn all about this technology now that I am retired. Many Thanks[I][COLOR=blue] -------------------- Martyn

mbox should do you fine... and actually I believe that the ProTools LE Software will be easier to work with than Logic... when it comes to editing audio... ProTools is the winner hands down. What's really cool is get the mbox and then get the Amplitude RTAS plugin and add to ProTools and then you can make your guitar howl like almost any amp and fx combo you can think of. Its gotten rave reviews. Be warned however, it might take you some time to get really comfortable working in ProTools just as any new software... just keep experimenting and referring back to manual and it will come to you.

I was reading the discussion very carefully because I'am considering for a while what to buy (and why) for my very knew Powerbook G4 and OS also very new for me. I consulted several people and I made a conclusion of all the in's and out's.
So far this is what I was adviced for my Powerbook G4 / OS 10.2.6. and my gitar; Software; 1) Logic, 2) Cubase SL/SX 3) ProTools LE About ProTools they told me, that working with midi is not very convenient About the harware side; 1) Roland UA20, Aardvark USB3, MBox, Now I can't make a choise so easy, because the MBox is to me a good looking piece and fine in line beside the Powerbook (just emotional ) but it do not have a midi in/out and my Powerbook has just two USB ports (powered). How can I hear then my midi sound. Is ProTool there with a good virtual synth? And if so is there latency? Can I load and make hearable every midi file?? Can I add (just like Sonar and Cakewalk) text en chord diagrams to it? What I primary need for midi is just making a bass line, drums and that kind of simpel stuff, translate it to audio and thats about all with midi. I'm also retiered and play fingerpicking on my gitar for almost my life (not very good but fanatic....) Looking forward for your advices!! Thanks, Kees |

I have done complete songs in midi in PT LE so I know PT LE has no prob doing basslines... there are some more complex midi things that PT LE won't do but its not really that bad for midi IMHO. As matter of fact... my song "Galactic Thrush" on the MacMusic CD is done entirely in PT LE midi if anyone has that.
But if composing in midi is the major thing... then I would suggest Logic but PT does audio better. -------------------- ----------------------------------------
