Hi Mac Music Makers
Is there anybody out there using Motu 828? I am seriously considering
buying one . It looks great on paper but I would like to hear from an
experienced user as this would be my first encounter with fire wire
based audio.

I'm using one with my iBook. Haven't had it very long, but so far it's great. One thing I've heard is that you really need to get a Firewire drive that uses the Oxford 911 chipset. It's supposed to have the best buss throughput, allowing you to get more tracks more reliably. Since I'm mainly going to use mine for live to 2 track stuff, finding one of these drives has been a low priority. I believe a company named Granite digital makes one, among others. BTW - the AudioDesk recording software included with the 828 is pretty good, unless you need MIDI.

Hi Scott, thanks for the tips. I too will be doing live recording, but I want
to do 8 track from the FOH mixer groups. As for midi, I will try the Logic Audio
as it is compatible (hopefully).
I still haven´t found where I can buy an 828 here in Austria,I guess it´s still too
new.
Thanks again....Colin

Why not use Digital Performer? MOTU made the 828 for use with it (it helps when your hardware & software are from the same company). AudioDesk is just the audio section of DP. You can get DP at a discount when buying the 828, or as an upgrade to AudioDesk. If you already have Logic Audio, I can understand wanting to stay with it. If you're only recording 8 tracks at a time, firewire throughput is less of an issue - but (I'm sure you already know) recording to a dedicated HD is essential to avoid glitches caused by the OS or background tasks accessing the HD while recording. Have you checked www.motu.com to see about availability in Austria? I'm sure a major American catalog retailer like Sweetwater would be happy to sell you one - not sure about taxes/import duties at your end, though.

That´s right,
I already have Logic 4.7 and I love it.
I have heard that it is unwise to have free midi and
oms installed at the same time, so I will check out
Logic first. In the end Logic and DP are very similar,
but as I am still winceing from laying out the cash
for the G4 I am in the mood to be parsimonious!
Have now found suppliers in Austria... good deals!
