Does anyone know how I can use my G4 with 9.0.4 to convert 12" LPs to MP3s that I can use Roxio Toast to make CDs with? I heard about a USB device with 2 RCA plug holes that can be used to connect a stereo (playing LPs) to the computer. Has anyone heard of that? Any help would be greatly appreciated, CharlieN

The output from your disks is analogical. You need to convert it to digital. I'm waiting for the appropriate cables to connect my turntable to my Mbox so I can burn some CDs. Will know in a weeks time what happens.

umm just wanted to mention that for best sound quality... make CD's from aiff files before making mp3's. In fact, unless you want to listen to the mp3s on computer or somethng... there is no need to make mp3's if you just want CDs of your LPs. Toast comes with an audio extractor program that is good for making LPs digital because it will take the two big recordings of side a and side b and let you cut them to make seperate tracks for each song and then put them in order.

oh yeah... you might get away with using some type of adapter that might patch into sound input on computer that will work but for best sound quality... a sound card or some tupe of interface (usb or firewire) will give best results.

And if you have a RIAA preamp between the vinyle and the mac it's better too.

vinyles are recorded with a correction curve (standardized by the RIAA so…) that should be reversed if you can. wink.gif

For the ones interested the schematics of a RIAA preamp with the PCB and explanations in Greek and English.

Enjoy!

there's also the curve of the RIAA correction we are talking about.

To respond to the original question, what G4 model do you have? How will you be playing the LPs?

You'll probably tire of seeing this as the default answer to almost every audio question, but buy yourself a Griffin iMic, for about 50-70 bucks. Plug that into a USB port (no problem running mine through the keyboard on a flat 15" iMac), then you have a stereo 1/8" available, Line or Phono level select.
The iMic is recognized immediately by the OS, and appears as a selection in the audio-in dropdownlistboxthing.
I'm using Amadeus to record tracks, which will export to aiff(native), .wav, .mp3, Ogg Vorbis, and a few others.

Hope that helps.

Nobody talk about clik, pops and big latence of Griffin iMic... the Asio Driver too it's lousy (no intention to buy a specific asio driver for more money than the iMic)... i've cast in a drawer my iMic and forget it. wink.gif

I tried putting my turntable through my Mbox and burnt out my nice Dynaudio BM6A monitors.

Anybody know why?

Be careful!!!!
