Hello all,
I have an old PC, which I’d like to use in my set up with my Powerbook. I’d like to use Logic to send midi data to the PC to use it as a sound module. So, could I get a soundcard for my PC, run my x-stations midi out to the PC’s midi in, then run the output from the PC’s soundcard to the X-stations input and record onto a channel in logic? Would it work? Could I control parameters on say Absynth on the PC, with logic on the Powerbook? Are there any other ways to incorporate a pc into a Mac setup? Peace & Many Thank I Know Nothing 23 |

I'd look in the MIDI over LAN direction, that is using Ethernet, it's faster, no MIDI interface in between so less latency.
Easy to set up on the mac are iMIDI and also the network routing in audio/MIDI setup utility, now i'm not sure it can talk to PC software on the other side, it needs some searching… I'm going to ask someone else who may know… -------------------- Our Classifeds • Nos petites annonces • Terms Of Service / Conditions d'Utilisation • Forum Rules / Règles des Forums • MacMusic.Org & SETI@Home

I did something like this to run a bunch of PC only freeware apps - My PC has a soundcard with midi I/O & audio out & all I did was send midi from my Mac (thru my M-audio Oxygen 8 keyboard connected to the Mac via USB & to the PC via Midi Out with a midi connector) & then had the audio outs from my PC (an EMU 1820) connected to my Mackie Onyx mixer inputs (connected to my Mac via Firewire) . To keep things even simpler if you want a free VST mini host try:
www.tobybear.de for your PC. I loved this thing so much I donated money to the cause. Lemme know if you need any more info. Prior to this, I was just using my PC for an "internet machine." BTW the earlier Posts will probably work better due to the inherent latency involved in my scheme- but this is easier & I haven't really noticed any. |

Here's a link I found if you really wanna go crazy with the PC/Mac LAN network thing:
http://emusician.com/tutorials/emusic_midi_lanlubbers/ I remembered seeing an article on this & EM always puts their tutorials online the same month. |

mortalengines, wicked, thank you.
I need to get audio interface for my pc so I may just go for the midi-midi path but the network thing looks like a giggle. I may give both ago. Do you think it would be possible to share my x-station with both the mac and the PC. I doubt it but i thought id ask. Peace & Many Thanks I Know Nothing 23 |

I don't know much about the X station but if it has Usb & midi in & out you should be able to if the x station has both USB & midi in & out- M audio has a USB midisport that you may need to get midi from the mac/x-station to your pc (assuming that the interface/soundcard you get doesn't have midi ports - if it does you just need to get some midi cables)
