It's a rather large domain… wink.gif

There are a TON of freeware & shareware synths (vst & AU) out there- a good google search can get you on the right track- By the way, almost all of them require some kind of tweaking (the idea being you have to work to make your own "personal" sounds). This is the joy (ha! ha!) of synthesis. Reason & Reaktor have alot of good sounding synths & patches right out of the box (this is especially true of Reaktor) but they cost more than a few bucks & you will still find yourself doing quite a bit of tweaking to get THAT SOUND you're often looking for.
If you are looking for freeware & shareware synths check out hitsquad.com & samplepoolz.com. Don't be afraid to get in there & really screw up some of your synth patches in garageband either - you may be surprised...some of my best sounds are the result of mistakes. There are also a multitude of books & online tutorials regarding synthesis that are quite a bit of help.

Take a closer look at the individual GB instruments. Some are derived from the EXS format sampler, and you can do some tweaking. Other instruments are programable soft synths, that allow you to create your own sounds.

More instuments are included with the Jampacks and 3rd party apple Loop collections.

I am not sure what you mean: "direct playback of sounds by midi". I assume that even with garage band if you arm any track to receive midi from your keyboard & have one of GB's instruments open on said track, you should be able to "directly play back" the sound that the aforementioned GB instrument is supposed to produce. Are you assuming that GB only plays back loops or midi info drawn in? This would be an incorrect assumption meaning that you haven't specified midi input from an external source in your preferences menu. To be blunt: What are you really asking? Or what is the problem that you are having with getting GB to do what you want it to do?

Okay, now I understand... As mentioned earlier GB has Jam Packs that have other synths & sample sounds for use inside of the Program. If you want to get into other sequencing software you can start looking at something like Ableton Live which is very open ended & can use VST & AU plug ins. I would suggest checking out the Jam Packs (they are pretty inexpensive if you shop around online) though if you find GB to be too "dinky" to satisfy your needs, start looking at Live or Reason.

You can use any Audio Unit synth in Garage Band. You don't need to get Live or Reason to use other Software Synthesizers (however both these programs are very good too).

I would suggest reading about how to use garage band http://www.apple.com/support/garageband/

Try Clicking on this link and downloading some of thle free audio unit software synths and see how they work.

Try Crystal or Automat for starters
