Lacie D2 Extreme Hard Drive Options

I've just bought this Lacie D2 Extreme 250gb and I find it noisy or perhaps it's not in good conditions.
It is connected to the PC via USB 1. ( I will connect it to a Powerbook next week )
I can hear a kind of fan ( or maybe is the drive rotating. Is it suposed to be always rotating ? )which makes an high pitch noise .
And I can hear some strange noises like some metal thing is scratching the case. This happens sometimes (as an example,this happens when I select all the folders in the drive and then right-click in properties ) . Is this normal ? Everywhere I read it says this drive is silent but mine is not.

lol who told you the Lacie drives were silent????? don't get me wrong i LOVE my lacie external drive but they are noisy "I believe like a aircraft" lol but what are you going to do. i am going to research enclosing it in another case to deaden the noise i would at the moment but....... anyways don't worry your drive is in good working condition it would concern me more if it was silent lol

The hard drive is always spinning, yes. There is also a fan. The "skritch" sound you hear is the drive heads accessing the data. that is normal. If you hear a "thwack" sound, however, especially if it is repeating, that is the head slamming against the end of its travel and that is not normal.

I own 3 D2's. They do not have a fan. (I've opened two of them up) All three of mine are totally silent. I don't even hear disk access noise...

Hi Camarao,
my opinion and advice is, never buy lacie. To expensive and at least much to noisy. It's much cheaper to prepare a own external, maybe with a newer icecube on firewire or, for example, I bought a One Technologies 250 GB for 170.- € on Firewire 800. It's really silent and works as good as possible. I also have lacie in my office and the sound drives me nearly crazy, so if you have still the possiblity to give it back, do it!.

If they are, then I will definately be getting one. If Trent Reznor trusts them and uses 3 of them, then I am game to buying one.

I think I can hear the "thwack" as you say, but can you describe this word a bit more ? I couldn't find it in the dictionary.

The noise I hear it seems like something is touching the metal case. I can also hear the disk reading but that is very , very low volume, almost silent .

It seems there are very different and almost opposite opinions on this drive. I'm confused...

Note that what you hear depends of the model of drive used inside, and LaCie doesn't build drives, they integrate into their enclosures. I'm not using LaCie for years (too expensive) and build my own drives, right now i have 5 Icecubes pleiades enclosures with cheap drives in them (all crappy Maxtor, use Seagate instead).

I've just noticed that my Lacie D2 Extreme Triple Interface 250 gb external hard drive has a Maxtor drive inside. I've heard that Maxtor drives are noisier than other brands such as Seagate. Do you think this is the problem ? Do Lacie D2 have all the same Maxtor drives inside ? Maybe it's better to return this drive and search for another model ... Any sugestions ? It has to be fanless, 7200 rpm and firewire 800.

Or can you advise me on a good firewire 800 enclosure without fans and a good, fast and silent hard drive ?
