i just picked up an 80gig owc external drive for use with my ibook g4. I have it up and running, and i know that you are supposed to keep the app(pro tools 6.4) on the internal drive, and the audio files on the external, but i was wondering if there was anything else that needed to be done in order to make things run the best, i.e., changing directories for saving files in pro tools? thanks for the help

The reason they want you to save all of your files to a external drive is so if you have a problem in the computer you won't lose all of your files. The only thing I recommend is to run a program like Norton Utilities Disc Doctor & Speed Disk Defrager about every week to 2 weeks depending on how much you use pro-tools. It will help keep your mac running nice and fast....

And remember you always want to save each song to it's own folder, and you should never overwrite a save. The reason for that is you can accidentally overwrite the original. Save each file new, then go back and listen to them, deleting the the ones you no longer want.

DON'T use Norton Utilities on OS X under any circumstances!!!!!! Norton Disk Doctor will DESTROY your OS X installation completely. Symantec have acknowledged that there are major problems -- and they have no plans to fix them because they have stopped developing for the Mac (except for NAV). Don't believe me? Do the research on the Apple Discussion Forums and the Apple expert sites. Norton Utilities is OK to use on *Mac OS 9-only* drives. But it eats essential OS X system files. For OS X, buy TechTool Pro 4: http://www.micromat.com/...and DiskWarrior 3: http://www.alsoft.com/Between the two of them, they'll keep your Mac and your drives in tip-top condition.
