I want to know if anyone has tried running a direct line for bass, guitar and used the two mic pre-amps for overheads on a drum kit simultaneously (and produced 4 seperate tracks). I'm pretty sure that this is possible but I want to make sure. Thanks!

It is possible, but i'm afraid the signal will be too low and too noisy - use as short cables as possible for both guitar and bass.

If the signal coming through the 1/4" inputs is too low and noisy, then what the heck are they for?

Line level gear. Instrument level is lower and since they're not hi-z 1/4 inputs and don't have a pre-amp the signal will be on the crappy side. You can use a couple DI boxes to compensate.
