Editing And Mastering Original Recordings

I just finished recording a new CD of original songs using a Roland VS-1880 Digital Recorder. Now I want to take those tracks, edit them and master them on my Mac G4 (OS X) and I'm educating myself on the processes involved.

Is the editing process where I would equalize the volumes of each song, so each is at the same level? Or is that part done in the mastering process?

Also, one song has some background noise (a car passing by - lol!) that is audible at the ending of the song, as it fades to 0db. Agian, is the editing process where I would remove that? Or would I best eliminate that in the mastering process?

Any knowledge shared about all this is greatly appreciated - I presently have ZERO understanding about editing and mastering.

What's The Best Mastering Program For Os X?

I'm an old pro at songwriting, performing and recording (I'm presently recording with a Roland VS-1880 Digital Studio) ... but now I'm getting into mastering my own tracks on my Mac G4 - OS X and trying to educate myself on the processes.

I'm trying to decide which one of two mastering programs I want to purchase:
1 - T-RackS - my favorite so far ... tube sounds and mastering ONLY.
2 - Sound Forge 7.0

Is anyone familiar with either of these? Or do you have other suggestions? ProTools is a bit pricey ... especially considering I ONLY want a mastering suite.

Pro Tools Free Version : Hey Jason

I just read your post about your preference for PRO TOOLS Free Version, so I went and downloaded a copy (along with all the other downloads that come with it).

I'm on a MAC G4 and just this week I've started looking for a good editing program. PRO TOOLS Free Version looks like the best thing I've seen so far, but I'm having trouble opening a song file to work with.

My song files are AIFF ... I've looked through the manual, but I can't seem to figure out how to import my AIFF files ... can you help me out? What am I not doing right?

Spark Music Editor

I'm new to the forum ... just downloaded SPARK Music Editor and was wondering if anyone here is familiar with it.

I want to edit things like microphone pops. I remember watching someone do that by grabbing a spike in the wave form where the pop occurs and then by clicking and draging the spike down, it's volume would disappear in the playback.

Does anyone know how to perform such a task in SPARK? Or are there any tutorials or books you know of that explains all the features in SPARK? There's no help file with the program and I'm at a loss about how to learn to use it.
