I'm new to manipulating sound files. I'd like to input my dad's oral history and some ethnic music from cassette tape into my eMac. I have the cord that goes from the output of the recorder to the audio input of the eMac.
What do I need on board to record the sound? Please stay relatively inexpensive. I'm a media specialist.

As for the input quality of an onboard soundcard it should be sufficient for voice recording (and of course recording will work). You might want to look for the Griffin iMic. A USB-powered audiocard on a cable and it provides better input than the onboard audiocard. And it's only 35 dollars (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/index.html). As for recording software I've been using 'Coaster' lately. A simple app with not a lot of options and does what it is supposed to do: recording. The downside is that it is a Mac Os 9 app so you do have to boot into 9 (if you have installed it).
