Can someone help me with the following:

I'm in performance mode on my Roland JV 1080 which means I can play up to 64 voices on up to 16 midi channels. I've set up my performance on the synth as I want it played back by the sequencer; in other words the right patches(sounds) on the right midi channels and the right midi channels assigned to the right arrange window tracks. Just as I want it.

I've set up the Multi-intrument (in the environment in Logic) to communicate on all midi channels, (by selecting the multi itself and not one of the individual sub-channels), and selecting "All" where it says "Cha". Everything works fine. Logic records and plays back fine; all the right instruments in all the right places. I do a bulk dump and then I can close the song, re-open it and it plays back just as I want it to. No probs so far.

Now, lets say I want to change a patch in the performance; in other words, I want a different sound on a particular midi channel. I can either go to the synth and press "parameter" followed by "wave" and select my new patch directly using just the synth. Or I can ALT+<double-click> the track in my LOGIC arrange window that I want to change. This opens a window from which I can select any patch. If I change the patch here, I can see the instrument name changing in the arrange window and I can see it changing on the synth too (providing I press <PERFORM>+<PATCH> and then select the corresponding Part). I can do another bulk dump and voila - change done.

Or is it? This procedure works fine for all midi channels APART FROM MIDI CHANNEL 1. I cannot change the patch on midi channel one from within LOGIC. I have to do it direct on the synth. Any ideas why?

thx

Hi Karambos,

Well it's a funny one this. I use Roland XP50s in my studio where I teach. We run Cubase VST but our problem (intermittently) is the same as you've experienced. Midi channel 1 won't always change to reflect the Prg Chng message from Cubase. In fact, this sometimes happens on multiple channels as well!

My feeling is it must be something in the performance on the XP (same basic engine as the 1080). All our workstations have Cubase set up the same way - i.e., no filtering of midi messages except sysex so I don't think the problem comes from the mac.
It infuriates me and the students too. I usually resort to creating an init performance on the XP and start again from there with my Cubase song up and running but this really shouldn't be necessary. I'm due to research this particular problem this week so if I have any joy I'll let you know!

And if you sort it, please tell me what it was!

may be take a look in your JV midi parameters (global) to check if this MIDI channel is not affected to Performance mode or something like that.

Funny, I can't seem to find the ALT key on my Mac.

But seriously. I had a similar thing happen with my Kurzweil K2VX keyboard with Digital Performer.
Try changing your Default MIDI channel on the Roland JV 1080 to something other than chan 1. I used channel 14. Then power it down and back up. If it's the same thing that happened to me it will now work on channel 1.
Strange, huh?
But as to "Why"... I dunno.

Good luck.

Some Rolands have the ability for a channel to be designated as a "master channel". If this is set up, the synth will eat program changes on the master channel and do, or try to do, something else with them. On my S-750, it will use patch changes on the master channel to load another volume from disk, assuming that I have patch numbers set up on the volumes. Otherwise, it will do nothing.

I'm not familiar with the 1080, but does it have something like this? It's suspicious to me that channel 1 is having the problem, because if the synth had a master-channel capability, channel 1 would probably be the factory setting. See if you can find anything like this, and if so, turn it off.
