The Drum maps and GM objects are definitely only for external synths or they can be patched to software synths, however they don't actually generate sounds themselves.

A good drum Sampler is Native Instruments' Battery (it works as a VST plugin) however this will currently only work under OS 9. Alternatively as I said before Emagic's EXS24 can load drum kits or loops and this will work under OS 9 and OS X.

Doggiebox is a neat drum machine solution for OS X users. It's not up to final-release quality yet, but I've been tracking it through its various beta versions and it's been getting better every time - it's definitely worth looking at. By the time Ben's finished it, it'll include pretty much everything users are asking for. Battery is very cool, too, but only OS 9 at present - OS X version due this year.

Re. PC Publishing: if the book in question is "Fast Guide To Emagic Logic" by Stephen Bennett, personally I wouldn't bother. I had a copy and hated it and returned it almost immediately to Amazon. It was no use whatsoever. Bought the Wizoo books instead - "Logic Audio 4 Macintosh" by Dave Bellingham and "Logic Audio FX Collection" by Ralf Kleinermanns. Both were SO much better written than the "Fast Guide..." and infinitely more helpful in getting started with Logic. I bought mine direct from the company website (www.wizoo.com), no problems. They've probably got updated versions now, too.
