HI.

I recently acquired a late-80s model Roland MIDI full size keyboard. I'd like to hook it up to either my original iMac (233) or my Powerbook 3400. I just want to fiddle around with it, nothing professional, so cost is an issue.

My questions are these:

1) What hardware will I need to get started? What is the cheapest way? Ideally, I'd like to run a cord out of the Mac and into my bass amp.

2) What software is reliable and easy to learn, but not too costly. Is there any shareware stuff available that will at least get me started?

Thanks,
Victor

First you need a small USB midi interface with one in one out to connect the keyboard to the mac for sequencing

be aware that your iMac is USB and the powerbook ADB/serial, you can use on both a Serial MIDI interface, but you'll need a USB/serial adaptor for use with the iMac.

On your Imac you must have an audio in, it's not top of the range converters, but for fiddling it's ok so you have audio in wink.gif

to treat Audio and have some midi sequencing you can't beat the price of ProTools Free, it's free…

On this, and the other issues, beside "fiddling" is rather a large question wink.gif search on the site and in this very forum, there should be already the answers wink.gif
