Can you provide some more details?
What software are you using? Do you need mic preamps, do you need MIDI built-in, do you want portability, do you want digital in/out, do you have a preference for firewire/PCI, do you want 96kHz capable, why do you want to upgrade, how much do you have to spend, etc, etc............

Personally I am a fan of RME products (http://www.rme-audio.com/). Great sound, extremely low latency. There are also beta drivers for OS X for most (all?) their products.

Are you wanting to replace your Digi001 or add to it?

If you're wanting a replacement type of upgrade, I would suggest moving up to the Digi002. You're already familiar with ProTools, and they're about to release ProTools 6 LE for OSX. Not only that, but the 8 track digital mixing control serface is really nice! Say good-bye to your mouse!!!

If you're planning on keeping the Digi001 at the core of your studio, and are just wanting more imputs, then try either an 8-channel pre-amp I/O like motu's or one of Presonis' preamps.

Also, owners of Digi001 and 002 can upgrade to a more "full version" of ProTools for $50 at DigiDesign's website. You still will have the 32 Audio Channel limit, but you will gain all of the other professional features of the fuller ProTools systems.

sorry but think you are a little confused about the ProTools LE upgrade... you can't upgrade LE to a full PT TDM version... and certainly not for $50. Plus, a TDM version is practically useless without the farm cards and not sure if it will even work with Digi001 hardware and driver. The PT LE upgrade for $50 is only for 5.0.x users wanting the newer version 5.1 or 5.1.1 which adds the online studio option and a few new features and fixes some bugs. Its still not full ProTools and its limited currently to 24 audio channels but will get 32 channels on next version at least that is what Digi001 and I think MBox are limited to.

you see, I have a Digi001 and I IMMEDIATELY checked digidesign site after reading your post because I had thought they just made a new announcement I didn't know about but not the case.

just thought I would clear this up a little wink.gif

Yes the RME is hammerfall.

If you have a grand look at the RME multifaceand PCI card.
Or for the ultimate (and a higher price tag to match) an ADI-8DS and a Digiface.

I tested the RME gear and a MOTU 896 side by side.
The sound quality on the multiface was far better in my opinion.
I was also able to play back more tracks at once with the Hammerfall and also the latency is lower with the hammerfall.

Have a read of some of the reviews of the RME products on their website.

Also Firewire isn't "faster" than PCI.

Oh and by the way I am using RME products with logic. It works great.

Hope this helps

P.S. I don't work for RME or have any interests in promoting their products!

This thread is on music and audio hardware that is your keyboard, your mic or you MPC around the mixer etc.
It's not for software, Mac units, PCI cards, audio interfaces etc. that it's OS9 in general and OSX in particular.

Ok so I got it wrong,"kick my ass will you"
In the meantime thanks for your responses, this site is well cool, Im just finding my way at the moment
all good
cheers

[MODERATOR MODE]
Thanks, at least ONE has red the pinned post!

cool, that's truly great smile.gif

Presto and I will have less work to keep things tidy, but It would be really great if everyone would make a little effort. I don't have as much time as I had before and Presto uses a modem, so the less moderation work there is the better smile.gif

(I don't say that threads are not interesting, they ARE smile.gif

Has anyone done an a/b test with motu896 and the metrichalo? How does the hammerfall sound against the MH?
just wanting to get some more feedback!
For me a full protools setup is out of budget (protools mix etc).so thats out of the equation for now.
I find that even though i have 1-neve mic pre i sometimes use the 001s mic pres, obviously for stereo applications,ie recording fender rhodes, stereo guitar synth, and even mono sources, guitar ,acoustics etc.I like the different dimensions in the sound this creates, therefore to upgrade the 001 would require equally good or preferably better mic pres.and or at least the ability to bypass then altogether without any (minimal)colourisation of sound.
