I have both a mac (panther) and a pc with windows xp.
I am a singer-songwriter-producer who's always used engineers. Now i find myself traveling and want to create songs on either a mac or a pc.
I have the garageband installed on the mac and it sounds a bit amateurish.
I want to get digi and learn how to use it myself but for now the price range is a bit steep.
What kind of affordable software could I get to start making some decent-sounding songs?
Thanks

excuse me for putting my 2 cents in but there is one program that not too many people know about or its starting to create a buzz. Its from the Mackie company and its called Tracktion (verson 3). The best feature is JUST ONE WINDOW that you work in!!! If you've used some of the main stream programs, Pro-Tools, Logic, etc. You know how there could be a lot of windows open. With just one being open you pretty much know where you are at all times. To inquire further go to: http://www.mackie.com/products/tracktion3/index.htmlThanks (No I don't work for the Mackie Company) Gene p.s. Did I tell you about the price? I won't, if your curious you'll find out for your self how much it cost.

I agree, Tracktion 3 is great. It's powerful, professional, easy to use, and affordable. Since it's a recent release there are still a few bug fixes they're working on, but I've been using it with no problems on my Intel iMac.
Also note that Logic Express 8 has just been released and Apple has reduced the price and redesigned the UI so that it's similar to Tracktion's 1-window approach. I just got it a couple of days ago. Installation, set-up, and some quick recording tests went very smoothly. I've always heard that Logic had a steep learning curve, but this update seems very intuitive to me. Also, it's in the same price range as Tracktion and comes with loads of plug-ins.
Unfortunately, Logic and Tracktion require OSX 10.4.9 and 10.4.8 respectively, but the pc version of Tracktion will run on WindowsXP.
