I need some way of playing MIDI into Logic Express plus recording microphones, guitars etc.

So far the RME Fireface 800 and the MOTU 828mkII look good.

Any other options I could look at or criteria I should consider?

Those two are both very good soundcards. But whats your budget? And how many inputs/outputs will you need? If you are going to be recording a band or drum kit you will either need a mixer aswell, or a soundcard with more mic pres.

I have an Edirol Fa 101, the mic pres are a bit crap but its great for use with a mixer.

fernbritton,

You can't go wrong with RME or MOTU. Good choices.

Presonus is great too.

Some 828 mk2 have issues in some limited (but annoying) cases, avoid second hand for these.

fernbriton,

For the best unbiased Information/Reviews concerning Hardware and "most" Software questions, issues, price, etc. is: www.soundonsound.com

Every manufacturer presents gear to them for Test/Review. They often help companies develop the product with their Pros and Cons on a product. I don't make a purchase without their advice. Not one regret.
