Hi Guys,

Somehow I can't upgrade to 10.3.9.
Anytime I try to open the installer on the install CD, OS X restarts with OS 9, and it says the CD is not a startup disc!!!

I also tried to install it from the CD without rebooting, but OS X won't let me, giving me the only option to restart, and then I can't do anything from OS 9!

S.O.S.!!! sad.gif

thanx,
ciao,
Iro.

First, to install OS X it MUST reboot, whichever road you try.

Second, On which computer are you trying to install?

Third, do the CD show up as bootable in the start up system preferences?

It's a digital audio G4 466.

The CD does show in the start up system preferences of OS X, but it does not in those of OS 9.

Any clue..? blink.gif

Mhmm reminds me things… Got to browse a bit and I come back, I'm busy now so I'll look after later sad.gif

Now, I can tell you, you've not been alone! blink.gif

Also, a G4 466 will always be faster under OS 9… especially for music. minimum ticket to be comfortable is a 800MHz-1GHz G4 (or a bi-400) under OS X. Save if you only use OS X for the net/email etc.

If you can, try the CD on another mac to see if it works.

Does another install CD works ? (like the OS 9 one)

Does your mac need a firmware update?

Have you third party stuff in the mac or around?
- RAM
- CD/DVD player/recorder
- video card
- mouse
- keyboard
-…

Check if internal connections are ok. RAM in place… (if you can/know what you are doing, unplug and re-plug without breaking something)

If I think 5 minutes more, I may find other means… rolleyes.gif
(now sleeeeeeeeeeeeeep)

iroiri,

What is the version of the startup disk control panel in the OS 9 system folder -> control panels?

It will need to be v9.2.1 or better to be able to see a Mac OS X volume as a startup device. Also, what version of Mac OS 9 is installed? It should be 9.2.1 or better (9.2.2 is the latest version and should have a compatible version of the start up disk control panel).

Otherwise, I'd follow lepetitmartien's advice on checking the install CD to see if it functions on another mac.

As another option, if you boot the G4 and hold down the option key, you should get the start up manager. It will show you all available boot volumes, regardless of OS versions.

What version of Mac OS X do you have alerady installed on the G4?

Cheers,
deacon

I ran into this problem once with a client, do you have any third party RAM? try removing it then installing, sometimes the installer balks when it detects unknown ram id numbers.

I tried downloading version 10.3.9 and my mac would not deal with it. I then discovered I was on 10.3.4 and 10.3.9 needed 10.3.7 to work.
Is your disk a full version or just an upgrade?

To upgrade, always download the "combo"...

To install X on a 9, you must upgrade your firmware first, and then, install X with the three cd of Panther...

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/mac...update1039.html

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117

When you'll finished to install Panther, and upgrade it to 10.3.9, don't forget to update it with the system direct upgrade app, and it is better to avoid let it install it directly, choice "download items only", and launch the upgrades yourself from the pakages that mount on your desktop...

Finally, correct the permissions with disk utility app, in utilities folder...
