1. Go to Environment, choose "Audio",

2. Create a new Audio Object (in the "New" menu),

3. Double-click the object that was created to expand it

4. In the properties window choose the audio device you want to use

5. Choose "Aux 1" (or whatever number you like) for the channel

6. If you're recording the vocals for example from the input #1 of your audio interface, choose "Input 1" for the Aux channel strip input.

The channel strip you just created is the "Input Object" the manual was talking about. You can now insert any plug in you might have, for instance a compressor, in the channel strip insert.

Assuming that you have an audio interface that's capable of direct monitoring, all the signal that is inputted in the interface's input #1 is now fed directly in the Logic's mixer.

If your audio interface is not capable of direct monitoring, you must use "Software Monitoring" which can be turned on in your Logic's Audio Hardware & Drivers preferences. Software Monitoring causes latency and can make vocal recording a bit tricky.
