Basic Hardware Question Options

I'm thinking about buying either an ibook G4 or a Powerbook G4, and I want to record my band.
What hardware do I need to buy to do this? I've seen stereo RCA to USB devices, but is there anything that will let me multitrack straight onto the computer?

i.e. if i have 8 mics, is there any way i can record them as 8 separate audio tracks onto either an ibook or powerbook?

I would recomend if you actualy want a decent sound you can build on, A motu 828 traveler, it has 4 mic pre's so you can recoard 4 mics strait in, and then add a small desk or some mic pre's for the other channels. You can also set it up with the on board midi, which is very helpful.... otherwise just a normal mk2 828 is great, you can recoard professional quality and expand on the system.. Both come with Audio desk which is easy to use and is the smaller brother of Digital performer.. wich is very easy to use and quite powerful enough to make a professional album with, assuming the rest of your gear can match it... but apart from that it is pretty much plug them in firewire install the cd's and away you go.... I first started with a mac and pro tools, but when I saw how much quicker dp was for editing and midi I gave protools the flick....
