I have an unusual request from a choreographer:

I need to slip-in a short repititious loop of as yet undetermined lenght and on cue! let the rest of the music follow naturally as if performed live by symphony musicians. Now usually this would not be a problem to "collage" the whole thing but how to edit the clips on the go with 100% accuracy night after night.

I've tried ableton live but that was off half of the time, tried megaseg got lucky once or twice but not for live, melodyne ,recycle, reason but so far nothing works well enough. The best results for this live thing have actually been from Protools, manipulating the clips in real time (moving actual audio clips while the loop is playing and actually snugging in the cut on to the loop on cue (well a bar or two behind but cleanly). So any one out there with an idea?

Tanks

You should buy a hardware sampler and press the buttons to trigger the samples as you and when you need to. This will give you ultimate control and will sound more natural too as you can tap tap away at the buttons as the performance goes on...

Hardware samplers = possible human error in playback i.e. you have to trigger at a precise point and get the loop to fade rapidly, tried this on ram buffered CD players ,it's basically a splice between the two and it is never quite clean sometimes I was luckier than others.

Used to have a K2000 and used to trigger on the note down and on the release trigger a different effect ...but can I put a 45 min. piece of music on harware samplers? Also means I have to somehow edit the loop and all the music that comes before as seperate cues and trigger all the voice overs and sfx hmmm Think so far I'll stick with protools.

Thanks

If you have Live4 you can load the sample into the simler instrument and trigger it via midi.

gwu, I tried with live 4 but I can"t seem to get the timing right ,I have to anticipate the next go but the previous sample that is looped does not play till it's end it sometimes stops mid sample and the song switches to the next sample or clip. Any ideas?

Thank you

Have you tried setting the quantization to 'None' ? That would let you drop a clip at any time you wanted.

If the Launch mode for the clip is set to 'trigger' the clip will play to the end, unless you launch another clip on the same track, or launch another scene. You could set your clips up on different tracks so they don't stop mid-sample as you set in another clip on time. You could also use the tap tempo if you need to adjust.

Just a thought.

Actually The problem was from Live 4 not calculating the BPM accurately.Although I was editing a short loop right on the beat, it kept showing me I was looping at 2/3 of the loop and then it would warp the tempo to adjust (that was on my B/W g3 in OS X) but when I put the same loop in Live 4 on my iBook dual usb the BPM was correct and the effect played perfecttly. Perhaps something to do with the G3 .I did eventually play the file correctly in the G3 after tapping the beats and even entering the value numerically .Legato mode did for some interesting efx but the second clip would not start where I wanted although it did start on the beat as if the timing master included all the clips .I did not go further on the legato but will explore this later

So thank you all for your help.

Yes, often it is neccessary to enter the number of bars and beats manually for the clip. The warp works quite nice, but it is definitely NOT magic. You have to tell it what you have.

Cheers,
