Printing To Pdf From Logic Options

I am having a problem with printing to pdf from Panther in Logic 7. When I print a score to pdf, the file sizes are ridiculously large. 21MB for a 100 measure score with 12 staves. I am able to reduce the file size in Acrobat Pro 6 but it takes over 4 hours to process "consolidating duplicate fonts". My business is built on the ability to e-mail scores and parts to clients. Anyone have any insight into this problem?

Im a novice digital music maker, however I am a graphic designer by trade and might be able to guide you to what you need. I downloaded the manual for logic 7 and found some information that might prove fruitful.

Look under Graphic Export. There is a setting to choose resolution. it can range from 72dpi to 600 dpi. If people are going to view on screen 72 is good. If it is being printed on a laser printer or on a professional hi speed printer 300dpi would be perfect. My guess is that your setting is probably set at 600, which in my honest opinion isnt necessary unless you are somehow getting full color photographs in there as well.

So try setting this to 150 make your pdf and print it out as a test to see the quality. It will also lower your file size dramatically.

I would say look in your manual to see exactly how to get there or reference the apple online pdf of the manual as I did.

No luck. File size came out exactly the same.

My guess is maybe it's embedding multiple versions of a (musical note) font, maybe even one for each note. (Which would account for the huge file size)

Look under File>Document Properties>Fonts

There should proably be only a couple entries in there, maybe one for the notes, and one or two for other parts of the interface. If there is huge amount in there, then there is problem in the translation to PDF, if there is absolutely nothing in there, then it is probably writing entirely in raster, and that might also account for the large file size.

If there is a font embedding problem, try printing your file to a Postscript file and using Acrobat Distiller to make your PDF. You would have the option of embedding or not embedding fonts in there, and maybe you might find a huge file size difference without the fonts embedded. (Keep in mind, of course, that your files won't print correctly on someone elses computer if the fonts aren't embedded) This might just help point to where the problem is occuring.

Ok let me back up.

I didnt find in the manual anything regarding the making pdfs directly.

Do you print the score to a postscript file first?

Or is there an option in your print settings to print to pdf.

Either way if that is the case, your issue is more in the your acrobat distiller settings. I would next recommend going to going to the preferences inside there and setting those to 150 from 300 on the first tab and 150 in three spost on the second tab. There should be 3-4 instances in prefs for it to change depending on the version you are using.
