Hi,
I have an iBook G4, 1.2GHz, 768RAM, and an Edirol FA-101.

Just wondering your opinions on the better software. Any other 'cheap' suggestions welcome.

I'll mainly be recording 4 track drums, possibly aditional bass & guitar, ease of use is essential, especially where effects are concerned. I'll be using alot of compressor for the drums, the current garageband compressor seems ok & i've tried working other compressors manually with limited success.

I know there's not a great amount of detail about Garageband 2 yet, but your opinions are appreciated.

Seems to be Logic has more features, but garageband 2 will be 1/3 the price!

I've used both. I'm a complete novice with Logic Express 7, and was advanced with GarageBand 1.1.

The reason I made the switch was for the better stabability in Logic. I was getting up to 8 tracks, which GarageBand couldn't support. I've tested up to 65 Tracks on Logic 7 (all MIDI) with constant data. I was able to edit in real time with absolutely no problem. It ran on the iMac G5 1.8Ghz with 1024 MB of RAM. GarageBand definately wins in ease of use, but not so in effects. The effects that it does have work well, but it doesn't contain a wide variety.

I know nothing of GarageBand 2, so I can't answer that, but you can read about it here: http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/

From what you've said, it would seem that GarageBand would work very well with what you want to record. But if you're thinking of ever adding anymore tracks, I would recommend Logic Express 7. In my opinion, it is well worth the cost.
