OK, so this is probably a laughably-easy problem but I'm pretty much stuck, so please help...smile.gif

I've just acquired an iBook at work, primarily for ringtone composition - didn't plan on using an external synth as I only require a very basic standard GM sound set. Thing is, can't seem to find out whether the iBook has a built-in MIDI synth, as you get with practically all low-end PC soundcards, and Cubase has no mention of any such thing in its 'MIDI Out' option.

Can anyone shed any light on this? I know Quicktime deals with the playing back of MIDI files (is this via a soft synth?) Is there a built-in MIDI functionality? Or am I better off setting up an external synth? Or can anyone reccomend a VST Instrument that will emulate basic GM sounds?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Yes, there is built-in MIDI functionality in OS X. It's called CoreMIDI and you configure it with the AudioMIDI Setup utility.

The best interface for the OS X Quicktime synth (now called the Apple DLS Synthesizer) is Pete Yandell's SimpleSynth. You'll find it here:

I don't use Cubase so I can't help you in setting it up as an AU there.
