Problems Separating L/r Signals Without Bleed, using an iPod to play to tracks live Options

ok so here's the story...

i play in a band, and we just started playing to tracks. (we've been playing to a click for a while, so it seemed the next progresion) the way this works is as follows... the click/metronome is panned hard left, and the tracks (additional guitars, vox, etc...) are panned hard right. the idea is to separate that signal into distinct left and right... sending the left (metronome) signal to the drummer, and the right (tracks) signal to the mixing board to be included in the house mix as well as monitors.

here's the problem.... it seems that no matter what little gadgets i use to separate the signal, i have the same problem. i get bleeding between the 2 channels. this means there's a little bit of click in the mains for the audience to hear... this is not good...

the real weird thing is this... if i plug in JUST the left side, i get no bleeding. if i plug in JUST the right side, i also get no bleeding. it's only when i have both left and right plugged in that i have this problem.

any ideas?

From the way you describe it I would suspect it is a 'crosstalk' problem in the mixer or 'gadget' you are using. Crosstalk being 'leakage' from one channel into the other.
One possible solution is to not record the click at such a high level as it is a very sharp transient sound that can easily lead to crosstalk problems if it is recorded too 'hot'

...this would suggest it's not the ipod

if it's a cheap mixer or 'gadget' then the crosstalk figures are probably not that good.

If you can explain your setup in a little more detail i.e wiring and mixer configurations, then I may be able to help you some more
