I just got Digital Performer 4.12(with no manual) that I am using with mac os x on a 400mghz 512 mb G3. I tried recording some audio and found that the signal is getting through to make the track just fine, but i can not preview or monitor the take simply by arming the track. This is bizarre for me. How do you set the rec levels in DP4? How do you monitor what is being recorded? This doesn't seem to be standard at all, but perhaps my set up is wrong somewhere? How can I just hear an instrument in DP4? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, the answer for previewing audio tracks is located in the Audio Monitor window; which I had previously tried but I guess I missed the audio thru button. That was simple enough, but now the delay on the audio is pretty bad; can't really record like this. How do I get rid of the delay?

thanks for any response at all.

What kind of hardware are you using? Are you using samples or MIDI for your sounds?

Well, I am using midi and some samples, but the reference here is live instrumentation, such as guitar or vocals. Basically, I am trying to simply replace outboard DAW's with DP4. I can record by monitoring from my mixer alone, adn I tried increasing the buffer size. I still don't really get the input thing with the audio software. I am used to having a sens knob somewhere, as opposed to simply adjusting from the source. As far as MIDI: I really don't want to use MIDI in DP4, but that's where I am running into another problem: I want to use two different computers, and I have to figure out how to trigger my old Mac with the G3(DP4). Any ideas on how this is achieved? If anyone has the manual for DP4, maybe you could look that one up for me? I am trying to find a manual to purchase, I bought a book, but it sucks!

You can decrease the delay by lowering the buffer to 128 in the Hardware Configuration page.

The main question here is.. just how did you get a copy of DP without a manuel? Why can't you contact the manutacturer of DP to get the manuel?

Since you are using an older G3 machine, you will encounter latency problems due to slow processor speed. DP4 is optimized to perform well on G4 altivec engines or on the newer G5 computers. For your synchronization needs, you can try hooking up your mac to an older MIDI TIME PIECE or OPCODE STUDIO 4 hardware if your Mac has built-in serial ports or MTP(USB) if it has USB ports. I'm currently running DP 3.11 with Unity DS-1 soft-sampler on my Quicksilver G4 800Mhz with 768Mb amount of RAM. I'm still using an old STUDIO 4 (with KEYSPAN USB to serial adapter) to patch my MIDI setup and to sync my old DA88 machine (with SY88 sync card installed) by enabling MMC (MIDI Machine Control) on DP3. I've already tried with success using SMPTE or MIDI Clock to sync my gears slaving my Mac using the DA88 as master or vice versa. My audio gets routed through MOTU 828 firewire audio interface. Even with this kind of setup, I'm still experiencing delays when monitoring audio especially on higher buffer settings. The solution is lowering the buffer during vocal takes then afterwards increasing the buffer to the highest setting during mixing. Higher buffer size lets you maximize processor speeds and enables you to use more fx plugins in your mix. I hope this could be of some help to you. I only learned all this stuff by myself and was under privileged to attend any graduate school here in the Philippines so please excuse me for any grammatical errors. Thank you! cool.gif

And still the question remains: why do you not have a manual?

The only reason that a person would not have a manual is because that person did not buy the software.
