Hello everyone,

I bought a PowerBook G4 this week to (finally) replace an old Dell laptop from '98. I got it for school, and also to get started in the world of digital recording. I am absolutely new to Mac and am having trouble getting started.

My equipment consists of:
Guitars, amps, mics (all stuff I understand :)
Edirol UA-20 interface thing
Roland G-10 MIDI guitar system
PowerBook G4 w/ Garage Band

Recording audio seems pretty straight forward to me, but MIDI is giving me some difficulty. The UA-20's accompanying cd has drivers for OMS and Free MIDI platforms, but I'm not sure which (if either) is used in the Mac OSX operating system. Right now I can't get Garage Band to recognize the MIDI device plug and play style (yeah, I'm lazy).

I've been browsing these forums for a little while, but am completely lost on the acronyms, techie terms, etc. I would be most appreciative if someone could point me in the direction of some good beginner tutorials. Something that explains the basic way to set up what I have so I can start playing around.

Thanks a lot.

Well, the audio/midi configuration tool might help.

Go to your applications folder, then into utilities and you should see audio midi setup.

Try using that utility to get set up.

If the keyboard is recognised there, try garagebands preferences dialogue to make sure your equipment is selected there...

no need for oms and free midi in osx. this os has its own midi configuration tools. check the "audio midi sep-up" in your application folder (utilities) and follow the indications you'll find there.
good luck.
