iTunes can convert most audio types into :

Wav
Aiff
Mp3
Apple Lossless
AAC

What OS are you running? If you're in OSX, there's a converter in the software section of Macmusic called YAAC (Yet Another Audio converter) that is free, and so far I've had good luck using it!
