Hello to all,

I got one little question. Will i be able to produce music (electronic techno/house) with the following system:

PowerPC 350 MHZ with LOGIC Audio Platinum 4.7.3 installed
256 MB RAM
MAC OS 9.1
Pro Tools 5.0
4 GB extern harddisk
4 GB intern harddisk
CD burner

I also have a korg electribe EM-1 which i want to connect via midi with the mac..... what do i need for that?

I am sorry for my newbie questions, but i have no clue....

Thank you very much for every answer! smile.gif

1) I dont see why not ( for start producing some music)

2) You'll need to get an external midi interface either usb or serial based
depending on what ports your 350 MHz Mac have

If it's an BlueWhite G3 or iMac G3 you can opt for an usb-interface.

Have at least 512 Mo of RAM, it'll ease your life! Really.

hi to everybody, I teach protools at a small music school, and am just about to set up a studio. We have a G4 with a gig of ram, an audio meia platinum 24/96 soundcard, and the digi 002 hardware.Everything should arrive this week and I will connect everything and cross my fingers.I would appreciate any suggestions from the more experienced, his seems to be a great community. I will certainly need some support as problems arise.I also host a psychedelic and electronic radio show, always looking for neat things people do with synthesizers, so you can email me if you have music to share.Wish me luck. terry

Thanks for your replies!

I forgot to mention that it´s no G3, it´s just a simple PPC 9600. Will it still work?

I have seen a cheap Motu/Fastlane Midi-interface on ebay.

Will this do job? Or should i look for another?

Well a 9600 means you're stuck with Mac OS 9.1, maybe not even 9.2.x

You will be able to midi at least - probaly quite komplex stuff as long as you dont
do a lot of tweaking on the modulator & pitch-wheels.
( equals a lot of continous midi controller data & may choke your bandwith )

Also a 9600 means NO usb-port, so usb midi-interface is out unless you invest in a pci2usb-card.
(the original Apple ADB-bus is much slower than the usb-bus)

I dont know offhand if any such exists that will work with your 9600.
( if you are still willing to consider an oldtime adb-bus serial midi-interface I have an Opcode Studio 3 I can sell you cool.gif with lots of options )

As for audio I really dont know how much you'll be able to do on it.

All things considered I think you should invest in a more modern & powerful Mac at least a G4. Especially IF, you think you're going to do more audio than midi.

You would automatically get both usb & firewire ports so your options for interfaces & other external gear will be much broader.

Cheers: Dixiechicken
