I sold a couple of PC laptops and was almost going to buy a couple of turntables, a mixer and a sampler. But I knew that Mac's rocked at audio so I figured I could just do the DJ thing on a Mac. Can someone point me in the right direction? I have looked into some audio programs but most of them seem to be overkill (for now anyway). I am sure I will want to do bigger and better things, but I just want to be able to just to basic DJ stuff like any guy at amateur night at a club. I hope the powerbook I bought can do this. It seems from reading the forums that I shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks in advance

Well you can't do simpler than our exclusive "Ask the DJ" in the soft section. but if you want the more control you can you should look at NI Traktor

Ableton Live! I think it's exactly what you're looking for; I myself use it to DJ. A lot of professional DJs use it as well...check out some of them at Ableton Artists. You can pretty much do anything you can do on turntables...beatmatching, EQ, effects, mixing techniques, even simple scratches. You can download a demo at www.ableton.com that lets you use all the program's functionality except for saving your sessions.

Also, you eventually might want to beef up your RAM a bit. I have the same powerbook as you and 256 is a little on the low side. I'm up to 768 on mine (you can buy a stick of 512 at 4allmemory for $95.

Good luck!

For straight turntable replacement and DJ mixing with mp3s (plus FX and all that "creative sound" sort of thing), it's Traktor, no question.

yep... as a turntable/mixer replacement in digital domain... Traktor rocks... if you are considering that package... also consider getting something like the Echo card that has multiple outputs that you can use to monitor and cue. Also, i found that a nice midi keyboard controller will open lots of options creatively using Traktor... you can assign keys to do almost anything in the program. I was using my Oxygen8 with it and had one set of 4 rotary pots on it for Deck A EQ & gain and another set for Deck B EQ & gain... had pitch bend wheel control scratching... etc. Was really neat and easy to use. cool.gif
