I downloaded ProTOOLS Free ( for Mac OS 9 ) and I just can't figure out how
you set it up to record. sad.gif

My other audio sequencers are so simple to set up so I'm just lost with the way ProTOOLS works

..

Do yourself a favor. Don't go down that dark road .Drag ProTools to that little icon on your desktop
that looks a lot like a waste receptical. Then hit apple/shift/delete.

Rayzen... that is very helpful of you to suggest rolleyes.gif

once you get used to ProTools... its really very simple

to record... you just need to click the "R" button on an audio track in mixer view to activate the audio channel and then hit the record button button on the little window with the playback, rewind, fastforward etc. That will have you ready to go... then click play button or hit the spacebar to start recording from the 1/8" mic in jack on your computer. wink.gif

PLUS: remember that FREE only accepts the mac's own inputs and outputs, so it won't work trough an audiocard

Pronkie5 I tend to disagree...I've been using my us-122 and it works fine. Also many nusiicians are using their audiocards to record with.

Perhaps I misunderstand your statement, but....I just don't want anyone to missout on something free that works well. smile.gif

singingcrow, I think you are partially correct about the audio card (but I may be wrong). Does it let you select your audio card within the ProTools FREE app? If not... you are not getting the full advantage of your audio card with better audio quality... I am betting its still using the sound manager which then sends audio to your sound card which may work... but I don't think quality would be as good as a music app that directly accesses the audio card from within the app. cool.gif

wink.gif Okay yes you are correct. But if someone is just getting into recording and has limited funds you have to admit protools free offers a perfect opportunity with a quality sound that is perfect for the time being while they learn and save some cash for what they want, whether it be protools logic or whatnot. For my own knowledge, exactly how much would the use of sound manager deteriorate the sound? Other than a 4 or 8 track, I haven't worked with anything else yet, although my goal is logic, but I have a good ear and so far, not too bad.

which brings me to my question, since I am using protools free... (they wouldn't let me start a new topic for this):

Why am I able to hear and see the levels on both my master and audio track while I have my midi set up but not my midi track. From what I've read my routing is correct (i think) but as soon as I press the record on my midi track I can't hear a thing, and nothing records. I can draw in midi and hear that, but not while I play on my qwerty. blink.gif

And secondly, I want to use an old pc I have rotting in a closet as a sampler using the gigastudio24 that came with my us-122. How would I route my midi, and can I use the us-122 for the sound on both my mac and the pc?

thanks

well... using the sound manager isn't the worst thing in the world but to me... the sound is thinner and not as dynamic. While it usable... its just not the best solution really.

I am a bit puzzled by your midi question. What sound source is midi linked to ifrom within ProTools? Are you using a soft sampler or something?

also... what do you mean playing a qwerty? do you have some app that gives you midi control using your keyboard? Never heard of this within ProTools. Do you have OMS setup correctly? If OMS is setup correctly.. then you should be able to hear "midi recieved" within OMS setup if you try the test option when sending midi notes. If not... then something isn't right.

Basically, if you send midi out from PT on the mac (you need midi interface for PC too though) and into the PC midi input... then you would need to route the audio out signal from the PC back into the mac for recording but... there lies another issue. You will need the sound card in the mac to get sound in and PC will need a sound card to send audio out (for best results)

you may get by using the sound card for just input or output and try using a computer 1/8" mic in for inputting the audio or you may consider using the headphone jack on PC for sound out into sound card or mic line on mac if Giga Studio doesn't require an audio card to function.

I am sure if you play around with it enough... you will find a way to make it all work... worse case you may need another sound card and or midi interface for the PC.
