I'm Thinking Of Converting....

Hi all.

I was so excited to learn of the upgraded converters in the latest iteration of Garage Band that I decided to use it to set my guitarist up for recording all his tracks.

Too bad I didn't do my homework; the top quality setting in GB is 24-bit 44.1kHz, and the rest of my project is being recorded at 24-bit 48kHz in Pro Tools.

Now, when I dragged the higher-rate project files into the GB projects GB converted them flawlessly.

What I need to know is, how do I get them to go the other way? I need to convert from 44.1 to 48kHz. Some posts online suggest this might actually make it sound a tad better; I'll settle for not sounding any worse!

I don't want to use something like Audacity in case the quality of the conversion is questionable.....

Does anyone out there have any experience up-sampling or using GB files in Pro Tools sessions? There are a million programs out there that manipulate audio files, but for all I know Quicktime or iTunes can do it.......hoping someone knows something I don't!

Okay, may have partially answered my own question.....

Quicktime Pro does indeed allow for saving a 44.1 file in 48kHz, and there is a slight increase in file size, indicating something is going on...no strange artifacts or differences in tempo or pitch......

However, the original question still stands.

Is there a way to just drag the files into Pro Tools and have the conversion happen the way it did in GB? I can't test the theory, the Pro Tools rig is in another state, I use GB and Logic exclusively.

Nice to know I can do it in QT, even if it will be a total pain to have to convert that many tracks. Why didn't Apple just go all the way with those converters?!

Jam Packed And Never Found!

I have a real bummer on my hands here.....

I purchased a dual G4 in Chicago, along with Garage Band (this was before it came standard) and the extra Jam Pack.

The Jam Pack really enhances the functionality of this already amazing software.

Well, I just moved to Los Angeles, and purchased a new Powerbook, but try as I might I can not locate the Jam Pack disc anywhere! I literally tore my apartment apart looking for it today.

I contacted Apple and asked them, since my invoice with them proves I purchased the software, if they would at least allow me to come into an Apple store and have them load the software directly into the Powerbook, but they refused.

They want me to pay another $100 to get a new disc!!!

Tech support initially stated that I could not successfully transfer the needed data from the tower to the notebook.

Has anyone proved them wrong?

I NEED this enhancement for GB to be as functional as possible....

I commented to the manager of the Apple store that their reluctance to help is the kind of thing that drives people to pirating software.

However, since I really did have the original program, and love it, I merely want to use it again, not pirate it.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Digital Performer 4 Problems Galore

Hi.

I just spent a thoroughly discouraging day trying to configure my G3 iMac running OS X.2.6 and Digital Performer 4 to record and play back both MIDI sequences and Reason files.

I started with a fairly convoluted rig, patched through a MIDI patchbay, finally winding up at my M-Audio Quattro interface. After trying forever in vain to get anywhere past receiving MIDI, I simply plugged one in and one out (to and from) my trusty Korg SG controller. Same result. I can get it to indicate MIDI is being received, but try as I might it WILL NOT PLAY BACK!

And, when I tried using the ReWire interface in DP4 to record a Reason loop, I encountered a crapload of problems, ranging from not being able to figure out how to record the loop as it exists in Reason (it would record one pass and then record silence) to not being able to figure out how to keep my project's tempo intact, to DP 4 graying out and failing to recognize the presence of the Reason mix again and again. AND, the one time I did get audio, it was stuttering so badly it was totally unusable!
