Any Free Midi 'recorders'

hi all,

back in the days of OS9 i used the free Protools software (LE?) to record midi using my yamaha piano & midiman interface.

Are there any free equivalents that I can 'record' midi on OSX?

Making Simple Midi Backing Tracks

in your expert opinions, what would be a suitable choice of software for creating midi backing tracks? I want to 'record' the drums and bass (to begin with) to play along to with my guitar.

I'd like something simple and as cheap (or free) as possible to start with, just to experiment. OS9 or X.

I want to make tracks of specific songs rather than just play along with a style "à la band in a box".

Anyone help please?

Sound Module Question

hi all...

a simple question, to which I don't know the answer!

I have a MIDI compatible electric piano (yamaha p200) and I was considering picking up a used sound module to give me access to more sounds. The piano has a built in amp and stereo speakers. If I connect an external sound module, will the sounds come through my piano's speakers or will I need another set of speakers and/or an amp connected to the module?

Also, if anyone has any advice on which used sound modules I should maybe look for (perhaps on ebay) I would be grateful.

Confused!

I've posted questions on here before and you've been helpful, but every time I try and "break into" music software I just end up in a confused mess because it's all 'new ground' for me.

What do i want?

Well, I have a good electric piano midi interface, & a powerbook.

But I want to have more sounds available to me when I'm playing (just at home - not live or recording).

i know that keyboard plyers USED TO simply plug into a sound module which added more 'voices' to their instrument... and that is kind of what I want -- more funky basses, clavinets and synth sounds for starters. But surely software is the way to go rather than forking out for a sound module that will be outdated very soon.

Anyone, know what it is that i need?!

it might be useful to show us 'getting started' people what we should (or shouldn't) be aiming for.

i don't know whether you can hotlink images from this forum, but you could put links to any photos you already have online somewhere.
