I'm running DP 3.22 with Native Instruments B4 or Reason off the IAC bus. Haven't had trouble before, and now nothing but trouble. I hit play or record, and within seconds lock up.

Also, I've reinstalled both the B4, Reason, as well as OMS, (not DP), trashed preferences, etc. Is there some kind of wacky corruption within my IAC?

I can work around with Reason (exporting audio), but miss my B4.

New here, but appreciate any help

I have avoided using the IAC bus whenever possible... it was really horrible in latency for some of my apps in past so I never use it now.... maybe its just not enough to handle everything you are pushing through it

Sounds like you have a MIDI loop going. Try turning off "MIDI Patch-through" in DP. It's one of those things that's so simple it's easy to miss. ;-)

I've run into this quite alot with Reaktor, when an ensemble decides to send or echo MIDI. As soon as I enable IAC for playback BAM! Hard crash.

Damn NI for going back to that useless kludge OMS! Unstable, laggy and ancient. Ugh.

HTH,

I have similar setup as yours, except I use FreeMIDI 1.48.
For those apps that require OMS, I use OMS Emulator (It comes with FreeMIDI 1.38 only.)
I tried OMS, but ran into similar problems.

Unfortunately, Reaktor 4 doesn't like OMS emulator. Goes KABOOM if it's even loaded.

You guys rock! I've hated OMS since I've gotten it. I'll try getting FreeMidi 1.38
and see if that helps.

So why was OMS embraced by all these guys (as opposed to the seemingly more stable Free Midi?)?

And I guess the big question is, does OSX's solution really work (doing away with FreeMidi and OMS altogether.)?

Before OS X, APPLE set up OMS to be "de facto" for all MIDI.
The rest of software companies had to follow.
If you look at MOTU website, there's no mention of OMS Emulator what so ever, but FreeMIDI 1.38 is still there. smile.gif

Be warned, some apps don't get along with the Emulator.

Because Apple made it seem like it was going to be part of OSX's MIDI core. I don't run OSX--because it's clearly not ready for prime time--but I think the main reason Apple chose OMS over Freemidi is price. Opcode being essentially dead, of course. However if I'm not mistaken OMS isn't involved with OSX after all. (Anyone?)

However, OMS has been a nightmare for over a decade. OMS emulator always worked better, even with Opcode's own products. (Galaxy, for one.) FreeMIDI is so superior, it leaves you wondering why NI decided to rewrite the code for their products that run on OS9 to use such a piece of crap kludge.

If R4 is any indication, B4 & Reason won't work with OMS emulator. Your IAC issues are probably a MIDI loop, and can be worked around. It's all pretty stable on my machine.

Midi in OS X is a tranquil paradise garden compared to OS 9 and OMS.

You don't need OMS at all when you move to OS X. The only connection between the two is that I believe the same fella who wrote OMS went to work with Apple getting CoreMidi ready for OS X.

Not sure about the comment that OS X is "clearly not ready for prime time". Personally, I get a lot more prime time use out of my computer in OS X because it simply doesn't crash even a fraction as often as OS 9. All my apps are OS X compatible, so I have no reason to boot into OS 9 any more except nostalgia.

My two cents...

OMS emulation? Whoa. Let me ask- as somebody who didn't even have a computer this time last year, but chose to make MetaSynth his first soft synth, will this FreeMidi 1.38 allow me full range access to this app? I'm enjoying how much simpler Panther has made my life over Jaguar but Classic is still a pain. Please, no cheap potshots from the OS 9 gallery, a fella's got to be a newb sometime.

Thanks for taking the time...
