I recently thought how cool it would be to type in a mathematical equation like you would in a graphing calculator, but instead of seeing the results visually, the program would find a pattern in the graph and generate a sound file based on that pattern. For example, if you input a sine function, it would find the repeating wave pattern and generate a sound file that had just that one sine wave. I know there are programs that generate specific waves, like sine, saw, and square, but I want to be able to use my own equations. I would then import the resulting sound files (wav or aiff?) into my music program (Melody Assistant) and make my own instruments with them. Thanks for any help.

Hello.
You should use MAX/MSP bundlle for generating sound with your own equation.

Have you looked into using Mathematica. It's a symbolic computation program, and I know it has a feature relating sound and equations but whether it can function in the capacity you would like I don't know.
