You can mix through your computer using a DAW like - Digital Performer, Pro Tools or any other similar DAW software.
You can mix entirerely through outboard gear (boxes with lots of knobs etc)

You can mix these two methods as well.

But you will in any case need to have a good quality hifi amplifier connected to
a really good pair of monitor quality speaker systems,
either passive speakers or active speakers systems.

If you buy active studiomonitors (speakers with built in power-amplifiers and/or crossovers) you can
feed them directly from any source capable of supplying a line level audio signal.
( like a MOTU 828 Mk-II firewire audio-interface - as an example)

This scenario pre-suposses that you have a software DAW (DP-4, Logic, Pro Tools, Cubase,)
installed on you computer and that you have recorded some audio-material.

( you use the DAW as an audio playback machine the DAW has a virtual mixerboard on the screen)
(use the virtual mixerboard moving knobs and sliders for mixing you audio)

You could also use pair of really good headphones, from AKG or Senheiser or the like - as monitors.
Be careful about your (check the volume) ears if mixing through headphones.

Thats it for starters.
