Hi this is probably a stupid question but I will ask it anyway.
I currently use Pro Tools 6.2.2LE on my G4 466 Power Mac. I have the DIGI001 interface but because I tend to only use samples and some midi I have hardly ever actually needed to plug a real mic or instrument into it. I saw Powerbook G4s on sale and I want to get one and be able to run Pro tools on it so I can work on my sessions on the train/couch etc with headphones. Will I be able to run my Pro tools LE software on the powerbook without a hardware interface? Or could I use M-Powered if I got that? I seriously wouldn't need any ins/outs, if I ever have the need I can always use the Powermac and the DIGI001 anyway. Also, assuming I can find it, will M-powered run without the dongle? |

OK. 001 obviously needs to be installed in a PCI slot. Also is only supported up to PTLE 6.4. Keep that in the G4. If you want to run PT on the laptop you will need either mBox, 002, or an M-Powered approved FW interface. I think like the LE systems, M-Powered must have the interface hooked up to work.

Hi
I have the same set-up partly. i just made an os9 partition and downloaded protools free. it took a tiny bit of tweaking, for instance i had to find the right version of oms, but then it worked fine. also you should save your protools sessions to a higher version or something so they're readable on your other set-up. Good luck Gif |

I've been using Protools free for a while now after selling my DIGI001 4 years ago.
I recorded and mixed an entire album with it on a G3 powerbook, nothing else except I got it properly mastered afterwards, albeit with a decent front end. Apogee minime going into a VX pocket soundcard (PCMCIA). I've just recently got hold of a 1GHz G4 PB, which was the highest spec model capable of booting into OS9. I now have 2 systems. The G3 is good for taking out to record tracks as it is very robust and the G4 is used more for mixing duties due to the ability to run more plugins etc... It's a very good, pro-sounding and cheap option in my opinion. Don't baulk at the idea of the G3 either, you'd be amazed at how well it performs. You can hear the results here although they are MP3 quality. Powerbook Studio -------------------- |

Wow... Great songs, each better than the next, all constructed professionally. Chords, Structure, Playing, Voice, Variety. You have done well... Bravo.
You're also correct regarding G3's and G4's. I was very surprised when I went into one of Gremany's Top Mastering Studio's and found they worked on a G4 OS9. You sure got that "Rock" Thang down. Lot of creativty and work has gone into your compositions. Excellent. |

Thanks for the comments Mac Daddy! I am very proud of that work. I now get well-paid mixing work on the strength of that.
Those songs were written by myself and my co-songwriter (he's the singer and the lyricist). Everything else I played or programmed, but unfortunately I'm not working with him anymore. We got very close to a deal a couple of times in the USA although we are from UK. I'm not so bothered about going out on tour or being a rock star anymore, but I'd still like to see that album have some success and bring some financial reward for all the work that went into it! Glad you liked it. Thanks again. -------------------- |
